well iwan to make a camper from a defender, ideally to sleep 4 people, i was thinking a 110 12seater, with a roof tent or pop top, and then 2 people sleeping inside...
so any had experance of making a camper from a defender, i thought about a 130 , but these are abit harder to come by, bit more expensive and wasnt sure i need the extra room ??
i wasnt to be able to sit 5 people though, ideally forward facing, so is this possible to do? ive got a budget for the car of about 15kand want to spend under 4k turning it into a camper, you guys this this is possible? and worth it ?
also pop top or roof tent?
any ideas and thoughts appriceated

with 2 rows of seats, can 2 births fit in the rear?
iv seen it on van types with 3 seats up front + theres room for 2 adults to lay out in the back but otherwise i think the second row seats will interfere?

iv seen a few exellent BFambulance /camper conversions? -even further left field than you mentioned i know but worth a thought....

I could go for a roof tent and a put the money towards a decent normal tent, and have the front 5/6seats as normal( front and second row) and have the back where normally you have side facing seats make that into a decent kitchen, with hob and a sink, probably cheaper and easier ? Also I've heard of those oztents that go up in 30 seconds or summit like that, anyone heard of them ? And more importantly any good n worth the money ?

seen a few oztents + they are top quality -though at Top prices (you truely get what you pay for though)

id be tempted to go with ben's suggestion + for the cost of an oz roof jobby, you could get a full tilt camping set up.

was looking into trailer tents at one point + for the cost of an oz roof tent you could get a 'kanga' 4x4 trailer tent set up with all the frills (this was a dealer on ebay tho -not the main stealer)

though if you go for the roof tent, i recomend getting some 'bonking bars' -google them, well worth the £80 ;p

There are ambulance landy's for sale at most ex army places. Dunno where you are but there is one on the A38 between Lichfield and Burton on Trent that had about 10 last time I was there.

I made a camper from an old 110 van. It worked well, but a little cramped for 2. As mentioned, an old ambulance would convert well. I have seen them with wood burners and all sorts installed.
You still might struggle to sleep 4, but with a tent on one side and an awning on the other, you would be well sorted.

So do we think roof tent (or a bolt on pop top thingy) and one of those drive away awnings, seen some called caranex,then I could sleep 4 I think with 5/6seats,

I've tried several ideas but have ended up with maintaining the second row seats for the kids and making the rear into a storage area (check my storage solution thread in the expedition section). When the kids leave home I'll probably put a maggolina on the roof or fit a tilting roof like:

I saw one at Gaydon a couple of years ago and it looked brill.

However do consider what you want to achieve. If you want to establish a camp and then drive off you're better off with a good ground tent set-up.

I have a 110 hardtop I am turning into a fishing weekender/ camper, only me sleeping though, and I bought it with the fact that I did not plan on having more than one other passenger, I have better vehicle for more passengers.
I cant imagine how you would sleep four and store stuff, I would have thought you would be better having roof top tent or ground tent and keeping vehicle standard.
The pop top things I thought was a gimmick more than practical, sleep small children at best, and then it negates the option of putting stuff on the roof

You are going to be pushed for space/load capacity for 4 people with a 110 . a 130 would be a better bet. with a cabover shell on the back , double cab for 5 people, more space and load capacity . Tents are OK when its dry otherwise a real PITA JMHO

Can you get a side tent for a 110? (or 130) cuz I know about one's to go on the back door, I thought it`d be much cheaper and maybe better for a back tent(one you can drive away from,) and a drive away tent on the side, as those pop tops are £1300, this seems like a way cheaper idea and maybe better, my use for it will be weekend camping and would like to go places in the day, so the very back inside will be a kitchen and storage
