Hi ive a 200TDI Defender and my starter is like playing russian roulette when trying to start as it makes a horrible whirring noise as though its not engaging or it starts just fine , on average 1 out of 10 try's this happens i guess with not useing it daily cant help much just lately its once a week i get it out . sadly as im not as fit or able as i was so its a garage job and if ive got to pay him i may as well get it exchanged in preference to a quick clean and then end up taking it off again just to swap it , How long approx should it take him and what price should i expect to pay for a recon starter , i think he said £140ish for a new one , so its not getting one of them , If anyone is near macclesfield with one forsale please let know thanks gerry

done my starter last night 20 min job 1 bolt at the back is a bit tricky

£20 for a starter from my local landy guy

1st tho i would check your earths and make sure earth strap hasnt come off starter
and also the trigger wire on the starter mine had melted thru after coming in contact with the manifold

All leads look ok etc , would it be that intermitent if it was a earth , if it did it 9 times out of 10 faulty a fail ok i would agree buts its 9 out of 10 a good start just the odd fail to engage , maybe im to timid with the key turn , And time wise the inner wing panel/shield and downpipe need off i would say a good 3hrs off and back on , the garage chap said 5hrs + , If its that easy im happy i could'nt see the thing lol ,, ps prices are better £80 for a recon im a bit wary about a used one for £40 unless its some-one you know sods law get it get the garage chap to fit it and no better and end up getting a new one either way its got to be right and has to be sorted .

i could prob make the job last 45 mins if i had 3 cups of coffee and mafe some phone calls

Hi bongo1 Five hours ?? Nah 30 mins tops. Ask bustersbus on here he will tell u step by step. He might have photos

Where are you bongo? Surely someone could change it for him? I can do it in 4hrs 59 mins.

If he can get to terminal 1 at manchester airport for about 3pm i'll take my tools...flight doesnt get in til half past.

As landy wiltshireman said. Defender is the most easiest car to rebuilt or repair Recon mm 40-80 depends. But u could take your starter to auto electric for repair etc not much. It is only a starter it don't do anything else If u ask nicely maybe one of us here will do it for yer if one of us lives nearby etc

I would ask really really nicely with ££ also if anyone was near by to macclesfield to help , 5hrs does seem excessive although he would not charge for 5hrs even so i feel hes taking the pi@@ as he knows ive no option , trully since my op stuff i cant move my neck/wrist etc properly ok laugh :) but i cant get in the places i could so i need help and a starter . Its a 200tdi defender turbo up top so standard as far as im aware .

its a defender standard 200tdi with the turbo on top RIGHT not a retro fit , the downpipe as you look at the unit is on the right and drops down to bottom of engine and joins exhaust pipe , Its plated B-reg so the engine has been swapped but for a defender 200tdi TOP LEFT IS A PIC
