Hi, can anyone help?
I have TD5 1999, with only 56000 miles, it's only used at weekends. I have two probelms, the first only started 2 weeks ago, but has got worse, after crusing at around 50 for a few miles as I slowed for roundabout, the power just disapeared, no different noises or warning lights, just had enbough power in 1st to get to hard shoulder, after a minute power came back. It's now doing it at any speed after a few hundred yards and now taking longer before power comes back. A lot of black smoke comes out as well now. I changed the injector loom last year and checked for oil contamination on the connectors, due to the other problem I have that it misfires between 2500-2900 revs it you don't accelorate very, very carefully. There are no abnormal fault codes apart from one's related to the air con that isn't fitted. There is a EGR valve open code, taken that off and cleaned, but it closes Ok. Does anyone have any ideas please, before I have to hand it over to a dealer?
Thanks
Paul

pull off the vacuum pipe from the EGR and clog the pipe well with something as to not lose vaccuum there....maybe the modulator makes tricks

Hi there,

Thanks for the advice, it's certainly made me learn a lot more. I tried fitting an EGR by pass kit thingy, but made no difference, but then checked the wastegate (I'll be honest, never even heard of it before, but with the help of the internet and various You Tube video's, I now know a lot more) and found it was stuck closed, I managed to free it and now moves freely but the poroblem still exists, I've ordered a new modulator, if that still doesn't do it, I'll try the solenoid. I think I should be able to test the solenoid by connecting an air compressor? After reading various other posts, the syptoms do seem to point towards the wastegate including the, what seems like misfiring at 2500-2900 revs. I'll report on how I get on. Thanks for the advice

I've replaced the wastegate modulator, but it made no difference. I have noticed the intercooler pipe onto the inlet manifold is collapsing, would this cause the problem? I've taken the air filter out and made no difference, is it simply old pipes or is the intercooler blocked?

as above and try disconecting maf plug /check turbo hoses /wastegate and vac pipes

Dissconnect the air flow meter, and take it for a spin.

This plug.

take the pipe off and see if it's de-laminated inside.

Problems solved!!!
Power loss was caused by the hose into the intercooler de-laminating as described by Ratty, the inner lining had blown up like a balloon nearly the whole length almost totally blocking the hose (new silicon set from Ebay £49), bit fiddly to change, but not bad really.

The "misfiring" was probably the stuck wastegate valve, caused by a failed wastegate modulator (£23 from Ebay"), very easy to change.

Thank everyone for your posts, saved me a lot of money!
