Thanks chaps for the advice
Er, daft questions
if I take off the maf plug and it runs better why do I need a maf plug in the 1st place?
How do you check if the waste gate is operating? Is that easy or do I need to take it to a garage?
Re the MAF (Mass Air-Flow) sensor: if it runs better with the MAF disconnected it means the MAF is no longer working correctly. So by disconnecting it the ECU runs the engine on it's default fuel settings.
However with the MAF working correctly, the ECU receives accurate and current data which optimises performance. You need a working MAF.
I asked the question about historical performance to ascertain whether it was a fault that had recently occurred or a question of perception - it appears it's the former.
Things to check if performance goes off the boil:
1. Check/replace the air filter - diesel engines are VERY air hungry so for the cost of it, just replace it then you'll know it can't be that.
2. Do the MAF check thing. Replacements can be bought of Ebay from £30 - don't be put off by nay-sayers, I've bought 2 cheapies and they both worked fine.
3. Check for oil in the ECU red plug and socket. If there is oil here it means the injector harness oil seals have gone. A replacement harness costs about £30
4. Check/replace fuel filter.
A set(4 filters) of filters for the TD5 can be bought for about £25-30 from Paddocks or elsewhere.
Good luck
