I posted ages ago about a power loss problem on my 90 when i'm towing. Tried a few things,, thought i'd cured it but now it's back with a vengeance!

So it goes as follows..
Originally when towing a decent weight (1500kg ish) and normally going up hill under heavy load, the temperature gauge will start to creep over half, seem happy then suddenly shoot to the red and power is cut off (feels like hitting a rev limiter so i'm thinking fuel) It only happens for a second of so then everything is ok again.

I checked the normal red plug for oil problem last year and there was a tiny amount. Cleaned it up and it's still clean now. This week I have had the ECU open and it is bone dry inside. I have only checked this at the ECU end. should I be checking anything else? I suspected the coolant temp sensor in the thermostat housing so changed that, and also the header tank cap was leaking slightly so I replaced that too.

This weekend the problem came back and seemed to be worse than ever. It was happening more regularly and on less of an incline. On one occasion I was actually going downhill slightly!!

This is really beginning to annoy me, and to be honest it's a bit scarey when it happens
Can anyone give me any pointers at all??

One other thing that it's always seemed to do that could be linked (but i doubt it) When coasting and out of gear, approaching traffic lights for example the engine seems like it's not running on all cylinders and shakes quite a bit. If i'm in traffic and going down hill I can be sat ticking over no problem, take foot of the brake, start rolling and she starts missing a shaking, stop and it settles again. Does the TD5 have some kind of motion sensor on it that could be faulty? or is it a common thing? I recently de-catted and it seems more noticeable since. (passengers have commented on it)

Could the 2 be linked? i'm willing to try just about anything if anyone has any ideas

could it be air leaking somewhere? td5 has small t-piece on fuelpipe wich can be the proplem if it has air, that was in my mates defender td5.have u checked that could it be some grounding issues in electricks? maybe bad grounding? is it oil ok? and water? no proplems with those?

It sounds like the temp rise is knocking the landy into limp mode.

Are the coolant pipes pressurising or getting very hot?

Have you tried changing the thermostat?

Not that I have noticed but will have another poke around tomorrow when it's up to temp. The strange thing is that it literally shoots into the red for 1 second then back to half way When I replaced the temp sensor Roy had a play with it and seemed to think that it would fault to cool of the sensor lost water/ heat which put my theory of an air block out of the window

I may sound a bit thick but how might the thermostat help? I like the idea that it could be something so simple

I think that air getting into the fuel would cause a problem all the time and not just when towing?? I could well be wrong though. Do you know where the T piece is that was the problem on his?

The thermostat has a twin valve. One for the actual coolant temp and one which is a bypass for when the engine revs exceed 1500rpm. The idea being it keeps yer landy warmer when idling in cold weather. If one or the other of the valves is jamming up it can cause the temp increase.

The thermostat on a TD5 starts opening at 82 degs and is fully open at 95 degs. The temp gauge doesn't move within this range. It could be the temp is just getting over 95 and then cooling down again. It could be a steam pocket that's getting to the temp sensor. The thermostat is the easter egg looking thing tucked beside the rad on the passenger side.

If you want to borrow my nanocom to run around with it in instrument mode and see if that helps suss out what the actual temp is at all times give me a shout and I'll fire it up to you.

Ah now that makes sense! I think I will get it changed as a matter of course for what it is anyway.
As for the Nanocom, I think were just looking for any excuse to buy one

could this be the legendary injector washers as part of the problem? as Ratty's were well carbon covered and when it played up it sounded full of air/fuel pressure loss

and a dodgy thermostat if the viscous and rad are in good condition

It could be dodgy copper washers too. If the engine is straining on 4 cylinders it could cause the overheat too.

yes.

My landy still refused to stay running and kept cutting out after 15-20mins of running even after the new fuel pump was fitted. Prior to the cutting out problem it didn't have any rough running but was down on power intermittently. Unfortunately I haven't been able to test drive my landy since changing the washers but I've run the engine for half and hour or so a couple of times with no issues and the throttle is much more responsive. I'm hoping to test drive it in the next few days but it's definately looking promising.

I stuck a basic injector washer 'how to' up on my fuel pump thread and you can clearly see the carbon on the washer and bore I photographed. I think it was 3 of mine that were showing signs of carbon build up.

I don't know if you've already changed your injector loom but I decided to sling a new one on since I had the rocker cover off anyway. I'm hoping to clean the old one to remove any oil contamination and then fit new O rings so I can use it again.

I had a very small amount of oil at the red plug when I last checked it. As I was going into the rocker cover to change the injector washers I thought that I might as well change the loom at the same time. Sods law says that if I hadn't ordered one in I would've needed it for sure.

I is got a nice home made one from when I was an apprentice
