I am looking for a general purpose 90 TOY !! My heart and knowledge says 300TDi but why are TD5's very similiar money ? is their reputation that bad ?

I want to keep it a while, use it for road use plus off road to fetch logs out of my wood maybe take it on the occcasional holiday, and a little green laning but nothing extreme etc

My understanding is they are less reliable due to the electronics is this a fair assumption ?

Cheers

Richard

look on ebay you will see circa 95-97 tdi fetch 4750ish to 5k there are also TD5 s for 5-6 dependent on mileage !

I DID SAY SIMILAR MONEY !!:emps1:

Nothing wrong with TD5s, but 300s are very desirable for a few reasons; mainly their simplicity (lack of electronic systems), compared with a TD5 which although proved to be pretty reliable, cannot be fixed with a hammer and gaffer tape like a Tdi. :D

yer right there. You need a multi-meter and amalgamation tape instead.;):D

We got one of each ! if i had my way both would be 300tdi s !! but mrs doodle loves her td5. (stupid cow )....

One of my old mechanics who has retired now did have a 300TDi for years, he now has a TD5 'fender instead and although he likes the newer feel and drive of the TD5 he regrets not getting another 300TDi for its simplicity...

Whilst its working the TD5 is definitly the better option, when things go wrong the 300TDi would be the better option, I suppose it depends on the personality of the one your gonne end up with, some TD5's will never have an issue, some will forever play up, some 300's will happily work through hell, some will just be sluggish, old and crap...

I had a TD5 disco.

I now have a 300tdi disco.

I would buy the 300tdi every time. It is far far far far better.

When buying my Disco I just found the 300tdi more bullet proof... EGR valve was an easy fix etc ... Hammer and spanner toolbox... TD5 were great i just had the little voice in the back of my head saying ££££££££££££ if it breaks....

Hi,
Is the TD5 being unfairly treated being compared to the Tdi300?

Is the 300Tdi that much of an "all round" better engine of the to?
What is the day to day economy differences of both these engines?

Thanks,

Gra.

300tdi better around town, TD5 better for long journeys. (fuel wise)
I like my 300 but would like a TD5 for the extra power.

No, it's not all round better. It's just cheaper and easier to fix when it goes wrong...not just the engine, but all sorts of other parts will be more expensive on a newer Landy

My TD5 hasn't been quite as reliable as my 300tdi was. I bought my 300tdi with a knackered engine and bought my TD5 with a kackered HG. It hasn't really cost me any more to keep on the road than my 300tdi and hasn't proven any less reliable. I would check a TD5 over more thoroughly than a 300tdi if I was looking to buy one but I wouldn't have any qualms about getting another.
