Hello Folks.
This is me back to the world that is Range Rover after a break using 'normal' cars

I recently purchased v nice 2000 4.0 Hse lpg converted and my first job was to replace the Alpine head unit with one of Aldi's finest offerings (cd,bluetooth, mem card, usb, aux, input bells and whistles) all went fine brown and grey iso plugs straight in,ignore the block with the yellow, green and blue connections HOWEVER the radio functions perfectly then suddenly it receives a mute signal ? from where i dont know..this can happen from 5 seconds after turning the ignition on to 2 minutes...by a process of deduction i've cut the grey and black wire in the grey iso box and everything is fine...radio stays on all functions work but through the drivers side speakers only, the left side speakers are totally dead.

Anybody have any pointers of where i should be looking next ?...i've searched an searched online to no avail and ive also tried using the line out feed via a custom connector block but it still happens

Any help to this perplexing problem most welcome
regards
Magu

Hi James
Yes i cut the speaker wire which isolated the left speakers and the radio stays on and functions as it should but only through the right speakers,as soon as i reconnect the wire, and all speakers are working within about 2 minutes the whole speaker system becomes isolated, left and right no sound whatsoever although the radio 'appears' to function normally (changes between aux, tuner etc all lights on).
I think i remember reading somewhere that an amp ? could have a 'safe' mode where it isolates itself if there are problems ...could that be the cause ?

You haven't got the remains of a mobile phone kit hidden behind the dash have you? Any holes anywhere that might indicate that the cradle has been removed but the rest of the wiring has been left in?

Yes theres the remains of an old cradle on the dash and several spliced wires into the various blocks, ive removed the splices to the best of my ability but the problem is still persisting, even got the boot amp totally disconnected but the phone thing does seem plausible as thats exactly what its like,a phone mute occuring but at indeterminate time periods...it actually went for about 15 minutes on all 4 speakers this afternoon then kaput as normal !

I remember an old phone system that I had fitted once that required a cradle but also a box mounted in the dash. The normal (easiest) place for the phone fitter in most cars is around or behind the glove box so I'd have a nose round there.

Just a thought.
Next time it happens see if anything else on that door works, window or locks. Just wondering if it might be a loss of power to the outstation but all that you've noticed so far is the loss of sound.

everything works ok so no loss of power anywhere else,i did make a point of checking central locking, windows, sunroof etc after i'd disconnected the amp in the boot

Just to mention..the stock unit that was originally installed including cd changer worked perfectly including the tape deck !

First thing tomorrow i'll try hunting for the rest of the mobile phone connections/kit thats been left in...shame its doing this as the stereo is perfect for my needs and sounds good..i even managed to make a call via bluetooth today until the speakers decided to give me the silent treatment !

Until daylight..thanks for the suggestions
