is it just and my manor of drving or are defender and disco transfer boxs not up to the job .. just this is my third av broke in a year im replacing it in the mornin with a 300tdi box is there a stranger tranfer box that will fit and do the job ?

either your gearbox has a problem or its your driving, Ive only broken one in 24 years and that was an integral LT95 and I knew the bearings were well past their best, whats going wrong with them , it may help us to narrow down the problem, normally diffs or half shafts would be the 'weak link'

Cheers Steve

fairly robust if oil changed regulary ,but your probably putting on worn out ones 300 tdi is the strongest out of lt230s ,all the same problem your having or different faults, personaly i prefer the rrc borgwarner

:5biagree::5biagree: Unless you have been really unlucky and bought 3 knackerd T/B's, it is possibly down to driving style. Do they break when off roading or when driving on the road? Have you modified the drivetrain or fitted bigger tyres?

mainly used offroad and low gears the main gearbox is a recon ashcroft box with new shaft but it just puzzled me as to why i have gone thru 3 splines on output shaft as new oils get changed every 4months ep 80 90 in transfer and main box atf diffs get done at same time so all should be ok with oils no leaks i was givving it some hammer and nxt thing bang and lost drive for a few seconds then gript back got out and onto road and all way back it was bagning and thought was going to explode .. now taken off and the part of the box where the 2 flange are front and back the casing is smashed with a good crack thru it

which splines go ?never seen many strip splines on out put shaft of transfer box ,and its so easy to replace input gear that no one should fit worn splined input gear onto good gear box output shaft

I think that may answer your question. Why do people think that when driving off road they have to bury the accelerator through the floor? If your have no grip then it doesn't matter how hard you press the pedal, ya not going anywhere, you just make it more likely you will break something if they suddenly do find grip. If you do have traction than just use enough power to maintain forward momentum, any more is more likely to cause wheel spin and expensive damage when they grip again.

i was givving it some hammer and nxt thing bang

Yep that clearly identifies the weakest part of the drivetrain..... driver ability :)

lay off the loud pedal and learn the capabilities of yourself and the machine it'll work out a lot cheaper

Cheers Steve

LT230's actually quite strong. Most are past their best have seen plenty of center diff broken usually by clueless drivers putting difflock in after they got stuck and spinning wheels. also bearings collapsing but anyone worth their salt will hear a naff box and know its in its last legs. as for splines do you not think £60 is worth getting a new input gear before you destroy one and cover the tranny box is shards of hard ass metalic shards?
