Hello. I have a 63 SWB S2a with the older style (small stud) hubs. I want to change t the later (larger studs) for various reasons.

Can you think of any reason why not? I cant think of anything but perhaps I am missing something blindly obvious.

you'll need to drill out the holes in the drums to go over the bigger studs

main reason for changing the hubs/studs for the later ones is to stop the studs being pulled out of the hubs

only really worth keeping the original parts if you're a rivet counter and want to retain all period parts/appearance

but if your studs are secure and not falling out i see no point in changing the hubs
 
which hub had different sized bearings? (big outer small inner iirc)
in which case there may be problems with the stub axle not accepting the new hub.
 
I thought the stub axles were all the same fitment up to 1980? apart from some have oil seal runners or distance pieces or whatever they are called (not quite understood why/what that is about perhaps someone could explain?). Military is different i think.

Didn't think about the drums...but the ones fitted to mine are the 1970 onwards part 591039 so assuming these will be fine?

......this is exactly why i am replacing! Rivet counter I am not...landies were designed to be adapted :)
 
not too sure when bearing sizes changed so be careful there or buy stubs and hubs together to be sure you have matching parts

the "distance piece" or "land" is the piece that the hub seal runs on, on most Series they are removable but on late S3s they became part of the stub axle and cannot be changed once worn out/rusted to death (post 1980 i think)

bearings will be the same as you said didnt change till 1980 so later hub will fit pre 1980 and you already have later drums
 
Well, parts ordered from lrseries so will see how I get on...hopfeully it will get a bit warmer in the next few weeks!
 
warm enough today, i've been laid under a micra welding the floor back in for a neighbour

if it's cooler just put extra layers on :p
