Alright,

Would kind sole (I know there is plenty of ya) be kind enough to take a video of yourself testing the VCU on your P38 please?

Reason I ask is I am after a comparison for the speed the wheel will turn, as per the test on my other thread (link to YouTube) on a vehicle I know for a fact has a perfect VCU.

So, if you have nice and quiet diffs and no noises or rattles etc, you mind a couple of minutes of your time?

The speed at which the wheel will turns irrelevant, it's the amount of force you have to apply to make it turn at all that matters. As far as I know, as long as you can turn the wheel, the VCU is OK. When it's seized it's immpossible to turn the wheel.

Yeah I thought that, but I have heard that they get 'stiffer' and this causes problems?

As per my recent other threads, I'm just trying to cover all aces

I used a 27mm socket and 2 foot bar to turn it, but heard that you should be able to do it by hand-turning the wheel? Or is this b*llocks?

I test mine at every service, I can do it by turning the wheel.... just....but I'm pretty strong

you do need a bar as you did ,theres a multiplication of force needed through crown wheel ansd pinion .the faster you try to turn it the stiffer it gets,from what youve said about yours ,it sounds okay ,there is some tension in drive train even with a new one but not enough to harm system ,if you jack one wheel up it will turn some as tension is released

James: thanks again, I just wondered as this morning when reversing out the drive on the nice fresh laid snow, the rear wheels were slipping on full
lock and wondered if my VCU was dodgy after all, but seems normal :doh:

If there is less grip for the tyre on the snow, it will skip before it turns the VC.
