I have a 1995 TDI Auto Disco, 274k. Its in great condition. I have checked for any detectable movement in hubs (none other than some backlash in the overall drive train).

Can I get away with only repacking the bearings, or is it manditory to replace the bearings every so often?

Don't touch 'em untill you need to, check for lift or rough running every now and again, then change them when needed. Its a dead easy job as long as you have a 52mm box spanner for the hub nuts and a torque wrench.

I realise I'm in the wrong forum, but thanks for that. I was worried that I should be repacking the bearings regularly to reduce wear or pre-mature failure (just as I should on my trailer bearings).

On the front, there is a small amount of spline wear between the axle and drive flange, about 0.2mm as I rotate the hub back and forth, I can hear it click and feel it. Is this normal ?

Your half shaft/drive members should be a good fit, if not they will fret and eventually you will get a failure usually the drive member. Keep an eye on it and if it gets any worse change the drive members, they are cheap and easy to do.

Thanks guys. In the end, I paid a Land Rover specialist to clean, repack and reinstall them (New seals etc of course).
I think I would have ended up with black grease all over the garage (which is inside the house) if I tried.
