That's bad news then - you have a by-pass fitted, and if the hoses are 'solid' with no leaks, then we can discount any problem with them.

The RAC could at the very least couple up their diagnostic kit to read any fault codes etc.

Any LR parts could be sourced this morning in Inverness or Elgin, although I'm not sure if their parts depts are open Sat afternoon.

Now waiting for the RAC, could be up to 3 hours according to the system so will be struggling for Land Rover parts should they be needed, unless I can find another source. Apparently three RAC guys live in Nairn which might help, apparently my mother has kept them in work over the years

The bypass kit I got hold of (the commonly seen black painted one) doesn't have a 'plug' for the small braided hose so I've left that plugged with a screw and dangling until I can locate a tie-wrap. I presume that's recommended, I'm guessing it's some sort of vacuum feed to operate the EGR valve?

Don't if there's anything else I can be looking at, will probably use the waiting time to familiarise myself with what is where.

Will keep you updated on the how the saga progresses...

Have you tried disconnecting the MAF sensor, this will give you a fault code but the ECU uses a fallback strategy so power levels should return to relatively normal, it tends to overfuel a little bit so there could be a bit of smoke but it will eliminate the MAF as a possible cause.
I think this might be something to do with the variable vanes on your turbo, they could be stuck in the fully open position, would give normal boost at high RPM but diddly squat at low RPM. Is the little filter between the back of the engine & the bulkhead clean, this is part of the system that moves the vanes.

Thanks, RAC eta is 2 hours so I'm now looking to teach myself (with help) the basics to the Freelander TD4 engine.

I've located the MAF, not sure what I need to do to disconnect the MAF sensor though. Will also look for the filter at the back of the engine.

Again not sure what I'm looking for as far as the fuel rail pressure sensor connection. Think I can guess what/where it is so will see what I can do.

Best would be to go to RoverRons website: www.tuningdiesels.com
and have a look at the instructions there or on this forum for how to fit a Synergy2. The connections are to the MAF sensor and to the fuel rail sensor, so you will get info on how to remove / check the connections.

Don't try to remove the MAF - it really needs the security torx bit/socket to do that - as today you only need to disconnect it.

Both of these sensors can be found by feeling in the correct place - but to get better access to the MAF you need to take the engine cover and air filter housing off. For the fuel rail sensor you need to look/feel under the intake ducting to the air-filter about 6" to the rear of the EGR by-pass.

Look on the bright side - you'll be up to speed soon, how do you think we found out these things? Ha ha!

Wahoo, some progress!

I've disconnected the MAF sensor (I hope it's the MAF sensor ) and lo and behold the power is back. Quick zoom up the road and back and running beautifully, only thing is the engine management light is on.

Plugged the MAF sensor back in and once again its a slug.

So I assume this means the MAF is kaputt, time for a Pierburgh then...and perhaps a Synergy 2 too. Until I can source a new MAF what are the implications on running with the MAF sensor disconnected, is that practical or do I need to sort something out before embarking on a 300 mile drive home?

One other thing that's nagging me, I haven't a clue what this little clear plastic assembly with vaned filter thingy in. It looks like the other end should be connected to something, it isn't, is that right???

Good - now we're getting somewhere.

Your MAF is obviously Kaput.

The little filter is the turbo vent - it should be open at one end.

As for a 300 mile journey without a MAF I don't know as the ECU will be running on a default value and will probably be overfuelling so you will get rubbish mpg and possibly some smoke.

Maybe someone will be able to comment as to whether any harm may be done as it'll be a few days at least or you get yourself a Pierburg. Certainly don't buy an expensive replacement Bosch one.

I don't think you can fit the Pierburg without the Synergy at the same time as the ECU will not interpret the Pierburg signal correctly.

I could loan you my 75K old Bosch one which is still in reasonable working order to tide you over.

Thanks Singvogel, was just writing a PM when the doorbell rang, it was the RAC. I should be ok without the loan MAF.

They've pretty much gone through the motions since 'we've' confirmed it's the MAF. Took it out for a spin with the diags running, not throwing up an errors with the MAF connected but performance problem is obvious. Without MAF sensor connecting nothing adverse showing and can see the difference.

No smoke when running even with a lot of throttle. RAC man says should be fine to run about in, hopefully it won't kick into limp mode. I'll look to replace asap with a Synergy bundle.

That's great chipfork - I'm very happy to hear you're fixed up now.

Be sure to get the Synergy with the dash switch option - it's well worth the extra few quid - I wouldn't be without it.

Have a safe trip South, and who knows, you might be taken up on your offer of a beer or two in the future.

Finger crossed it's an uneventful trip back though tomorrow I'm taking a small stop on the tourist trail to visit friends in Motherwell
