it depends on definition of rattle ,ive allways found the two quite seperate noises but hard to describe but youd know if it was actually heard

very true but you can never be sure of someones description,the number of new clutches that i had to refit because of it

similar, but not quite the same. when the carbs on a jap multi m/c are out of synch. the clutch rattles on tickover.

So if I remove and refit, what am I looking out for or what do I need to do to stop the problem?

to do either release bearing or clutch plate means removal of gear box or engine, if you was to do that id fit both and a new h/d clutch lever and check lever pivot and also replace if worn

I had same with my 90 prior to removing the 19j.
Put 200tdi in and replaced the fork thrust bearing and clutch.
Still does it.
I reckon it's the clutch fork pivot, a small shiny ball bolted in to the bell housing. I noticed this was very warn but did not replace as was up to me nuts in it, and ad a deadline.
Also I don't know what his this is called and if the stock them.

johns little tip ;

to move the gearbox first you gotta remove the clutch slave cylinder just unbolt it without disconecting the fluid line and wrap duct tape round it end to end to stop the pushrod comeing out of the end ( its a ****ing nightmare to get back in without knackering the seals) this will inturn save a lot of frigging about later bleeding the fukker back up later on

if your gonna go through moveing the gearbox back route also make sure you unclip the plug for the reverse light switch if its an lt77 box otherwise youl have fun n games trying to get the broken one out

remove the rear driveshaft first and FFS CHOCK THE BACK WHEELS leave the carrying crossmember in place and up the drivers side there will be a plate bracket holding the handbrake cable assy in place unbolt this plate and all the hangars for the gearbox

then undo the gearbox from the engine at the bell houseing beware there is a bolt in this right at the top its a cnut to get at ( if its a disco youll need to dismantle the centre console to move the gearstick backwards ) the gearbox should slide back far enough to get into the clutch assembly without totally removeing the gearbox

this will be a damn sight easier than trying to lift the gearbox off the floor as it weighs a bloody tonne and is a bastard to lift with 2 men nevermind on yer own

Thats a good point. Even if they are not the source of the incessant idle chattering, id suggest that as a precautionary measure

Thought I'd update.

I've decided it's the springs. It's had a new clutch kit so odds are everything else is just fine and from what I can gather it sounds about right as it is a rattle, no squeal or grinding.

So good news is I don't have to spend out or do any work

Bad news is I still have to put up with the missus' Idle chatter and kids whining! lol

I guarantee its the ball thing that the clutch release arm pivots on.
That is the only thing I did not replace when I done my clutch. I may be wrong though:lol:
