Alright,

98 P38 4.0 on Gas.

Well the P38 is currently stuck 8 miles away on a lay by and refuses to start...

I set off from work and all was fine (takes 30 seconds to change to gas) but stalled and then started to stutter, knew petrol was low so thought must be that, hence pulled over, waited for gas to kick in and then away I went, all ok :D

But... Pulled into petrol station, turned off, filled with £15 petrol, paid and set off, all ok running on petrol for 2 minutes then started to cough and splutter, wouldn't rev and then just died... Managed to limp to roadside and now she refuses to start at all.

If I leave her a minute then try, she fires but as soon as she tries to rev to tick-over speed, she conks out

I am thinking fuel filter or pump? Any ideas? I need some ammo before I go back with the tool box...

Regards,

Diehard

Try checking the MAF and associated duct work....

I had a 3.9 Classic on Gas, that if the LPG backfired, would blow one of the intake ducts off causing it to be a pig to start and not rev....

Not saying that is the cause, but when you head out, take some duct/gaffer tape with you as it *could* be a split intake hose/pipe/duct.....

If you can get it started, and idling, remove the MAF connector - if the running changes the MAF is probably OK, if there is no change in the running, the MAF is suspect.

Good luck and let us know how you get on....

Cheers for that, will check, although I had a quick look beforehand and couldn't see anything...

Just while I am on, every time I have removed the petrol filler since I got her, I get a hurricane of air rush out for about 5 seconds... I just thought this was normal as a pressureised system, could this indicate a fault somewhere?

If it cut when running on gas, doubt if it is fuel pump or filter

Sorry that is a bit misleading, when I pulled away from petrol station she was on petrol as not ran for 30 seconds and then she started to splutter and wouldn't rev over the cut-over point so died :(

It should hiss as it is a pressurised tank....but shouldn't be a hurricane..!!

If it is quite a gush, it could indicate a blocked fuel tank breather....

This would need to be sorted, as if your fuel pump is a good'un, it has been known to collapse the tank due to the vacuum created....

Also, if the tank cannot vent, the engine fuel pump *may* struggle to draw fuel to the engine....consider sucking on a straw with it block on the bottom of the glass - it will not flow too well...similar principle.

Nope cannot start her on gas as has a temp to reach A certain level and/or 30 seconds...

But had RAC man out as sister was covered and it's the fuel pump :( currently awaiting pick-up.

Tested at the engine, no fuel pressure in rail, relays ok, cut off ok, filter seemingly ok, no noise or anything from pump...

Its the maf.... Take some one with you and as you get it to fire disconnect the maf. it should then run on limp mode whitch will get you on gas and home... but it will not start with the maf disconnected so if you stall you have to go through the routine again.

Cheers guys but the pump seems buggered, we tested for pressure at the rail and nothing was there also removed the filter and turned her over and no flow... unless I'm missing something.

When you get it sorted google your make of LPG system a lot of them have a proceedure which will let you start on gas.

Ok will do, its a tartarini SGI system but not heard of any way of doing this? Wish the was mind as this time of year I use loads of petrol getting her to temp :(

Ok all fixed :)

Pump was well and truly shagged apparently, but at least all good now... Well apart from the fact I just checked and found that they forgot to put on the new filter (which I supplied) and the fuel pipes are hanging loose under the car... Should get this recified tomorrow...
