Hi all,
set of to work today, reversed out of my drive then drove as normal to work. pulled up in the car park and whent to reverse into the parking bay and there was no reverse. went to try it at dinner time and no different, forward but no reverse. home time got in and had reverse, so drove home and reversed in to my drive no problem .tried it a hour or so later and no reverse, run lever between r + d a few times then had reverse again. anyone had similar problems ? cheers phil

Yes! I once had a job too.

From park to reverse mine often needs a little extra travel towards neutral to engage, cable probably just need a little adjustment.

I hope you are right, i will see what the morning brings, it did have a recon box 8 month ago so i'm hoping its not that. cheers phil

Hi all,
latest problem! - which i think may be linked with the no reverse saga. after the last post it has driven fine to and from work with reverse working as it should, but today i left the engine running whilst in park whilst delivering cards and when i came to reverse it wouldnt, i put it in to neutral and pushed it back enough to clear the car infront. when i put it in to drive and set off it put up the abs and traction lights and tr action failure on warning display.turned of key , started up again, all lights went out but message display still flagged up the traction fault. after driving home i still had no reverse but after moving gear lever back and forth a few times it selected reverse and when i turned the ignition off there was no tc fault displayed. Does anyone know if these are these connected? or what the cause may be? i'm not sure its the cable out of adjustment anymore. i have recently fitted a new uj to the front prob but cant see this affecting it ,or am i wrong? cheers happy xmas phil.....

When you select Reverse does the R pop up on the Dashboard but you have no drive, or does it not show up and stays as N or D?

If it doesn't show, it could be the cable or the XYZ Switch for the Gear Selection which tells the EAT ECU which gear to select....

If the R does display but you get no drive, that suggests mechanical....

As for the ABS/TC problem - How good is your battery, as a naff battery will cause allsorts of issues and usually the first fault is the ABS and Traction Fault messages....

After a drive your battery will have enough of a charge to not show faults....after it has been standing the battery level has dropped to a level to start getting faults...

Just my two penneth worth...

Thanks for the reply, yes "r" is on the display when selected, pretty certain battery is ok as my hevac fan is stuck on and it has never failed to start , traction and abs faults seem to occour when it has been in park with engine running , although it has not happened enough times to say definatley. cheers Phil...

will check voltage in morning , what voltage should i be looking at dead and running? cheers phil.....

Standing without the engine running 12.5 volts or more, engine running at 2000rpm should see the voltage rising slowly to 14.2/14.4 volts.

Hi all,
tested voltage this morning, i have 12.2v when cold after overnight rest and 13.9v running@2000 rpm would this indicate a poor alternator performance not just good enought to supply its needs? as said earlier it has no problem starting as it fires streight away. alternator or battery ?
cheers phil....

That's at the bottom end of acceptable for me but neither would cause me to be reaching for my tools or wallet just yet.

:D

Can I change my mind?

Having read your posts again I think that I might be reaching for the tools but I'd be investigating wiring, especially earths. I'd start with a good sniff at the under bonnet fusebox then have a look and clean the gearbox ECU and then start nosing through RAVE and checking all earths relevant to the gearbox and traction etc. I just feel that an intermittent fault(s) is more likely to be electrical and a good look and a clean certainly won't do any harm.

Both those voltage figures are on the low side, maybe your meter is inaccurate or maybe the battery is on it's way out.

thanks both for the advice, i will have a good look over christmas . also forgot to mention that i'm replacing the front airbags over christmas as these ones are leaking- i didnt think at the time but the compressor must be running a lot more than normal just to keep up with the air demand and put a bigger draw on the battery!!!
thanks again phil........

Hi all,
just to let you know, i changed the airbags on the front end over christmas and i've never had the abs / tc lights on since, and it has gone into reverse every time ! i'm working on the theory that the compressor was taking to much power from the battery, running all the time. so thats it - i fixed my "it wont go into reverse" problem by changing the airbags!!!thanks for all the advice and pointing me in the right direction.
cheers Phil......
