Hi everyone,

A year ago i bought a very rusty 110 pickup with a 19J in it, with the plan of restoring it.

It had the usual faults, rotten rear crossmember, rotten outriggers all round, footwells, bulkhead gone by the hinges, and the bottom of the doors gone etc etc.

I cut off all the out riggers and replaced them with 3x2 box section with ajoining lengths to create incredably strong rock sliders that are now part of the integral chassis.
I replaced the rear crossmember with a standard OEM replacment and repaired the bulkhead, footwells and door bottoms.

The front turrets were also rotten and have now been replaced and fitted with new terrafirma shocks all round, keeping the standard springs.

I am now near the stage of a full respray, after buying van sides and roof to convert from a pick up back to van which i feel is more useful in our climate.

The engine smokes bad on start up but does clear after a bit.

Here's where i need some advice from you guys please?

I'm going to use some simple modifications to increase the power of the 19J with full intentions of seeing how much power i can get from it before it blows up!

Has this been done before? please link me the threads you deem appropriate for my reading.

I plan on increasing the pump timing, fitting an intercooler, boost gauge and a manual relief valve.

What is the standard actuator spring pressure and what is deemed to be the safest pressure to increase to with out melting the engine immedately?

Also i hope i have the later 19J which is stronger, how do i know if i have the later or the early weak engine?

Regards Tuneless

later ones have different engine code, i dont remember what it was :( but i have to ask, what do you mean about manual relief valve?

Bin it & get 200 or 300 for it, or it will cost you a fortune derv.
I know I had one, but not for long.

A manual relief valve is a brass valve with a spring and ball inside it, it is threaded and the more you do it up the harder it becomes to lift the ball off the seat, this is a way of controlling the amount of boost pressure the turbo delivers. It is placed between the turbo inlet housing and turbo actuator.

I will fit a boost gauge and record what the standard boost pressure is and then by adjusting the relief valve i can increase the boost pressure to the engine in order to gain more power and maybe make it more economical, raise it too much though and the engine will det and destroy itself.

I wouldn't waste my money on a 200 or 300!:)

After i blow up the 19J,

the 110 will get a jap engine for sure,

i've got a 3 litre N/A diesel mazda engine that i can get hold of with all the fitting kit for a defender, that will run on anything from paint to used chip oil!

I also have a 2.8td Daihatsu engine, (Bombproof imo) however i will have to buy all the fitting kit for that.

Haven't decided which one will go in yet, going to have fun modifying the 19J first and then see what happens!

why destroy the heritage of a fully restored 110 with a old impoted engine stick a nice landrover v8 in it and add lpg

Been through all the V8 conversion before, i did think about it as i do love the V8, tis one of the best engines out there!

However not many LPG fill up points where i live and the price is going to go up in the near future.

I find diesel Jap engines reliable and they can cope with the varied types of fuel i will chuck in them.
