Well, after another session of scraped knuckles and broken tools, I still can't get the swivels off the axle on my disco:mad::mad: it's the damn bolts that joint the swivel to the axle flange.

As it's now stopped dripping the one-shot out, I guess they are empty so needs doing soon. Looks like I'll have to stump up the cash and bung her into a garage:mad: I'll give them the parts to keep costs down though.

My nearest one is A.J.D. Land rovers in broxbourne, any know if they are ok, I hate others working on my baby:eek:

They won't even think about loosening, broke two good spanners so far, I even cut the open end off one and put a tube over for more leverage :(

Possibly need some heat which I don't have or some trade secret ;)

good spanners cant be if they broke .you get btter grip with spanner wrong way round ,and hitting spanner with hammer is better than long tube,if swivel off hitting end of bolt woth large drift helps shock threads, never had to resort to heat yet, jobs loike that really do require good spanners ie snap on long spanner or similar,i have very few snap on spanners buit 2 or 3 special spanners for such

As James says strike on the bolt head smartly with a hammer and then try a good, long 14mm spanner, I've got a set of common sizes that I use for 'tight' work and you can bash them. Also using a sand hammer or 'Thor' hammer maybe better than a solid strike one.

Ok I'm ordering a snap on long 14mm spanner, one more try.

You can't really whack the bolts as they are concealed by the swivel.

I'm hoping to pull the brake caliper off, then unscrew the ball bolts and pull the whole half-shaft and hub complete, will that work?

I can then fit the new seals without disturbing the hub etc.

you can with long drift if swivel housing is off but not with it on ,yes you can remove a whole wheel staion from axle tube and change seals without stripping the rest down

Good, that was the plan to minimise stripping down, I'll check the bearings for play anyway but I think they are both good.

See what happens next week:)

Dave, you could try getting some pressure on your 14mm spanner, and then **** like **** on the side of the axle tube, directly on the area where the bolt threads are inside the axle.

Know what I mean?

This will allow you to get good pressure on the spanner whilst a mate concentrates on smashing 10 bags out of the axle area.

This might give enough shock to help them loosen.

I'm surprised you're getting sufficient grip tbh on the bolt heads, usually they round over if they're very tight cos they're already corroded.

If your spanner has a good grip then don't give up, there's still a chance!

Only got a MAPP gas torch, it's hot but not sure if it's hot enough to make a difference, do you just heat the bolt head?

Will try shocking them too.

Really need a oxy-acetylene set to get proper heat. Mapp gas might manage something.

Yes you would be aiming to heat the bolt red hot then give it a go.

Cheers

Ok, I'll try it but I don't think I'll get red heat, still might be tetter than no heat I guess.

The spanner came today, very nice stuff is snap-on:)

Also got some one-shot.

Probably be ****ing down on Saturday:mad:

another tip for tight bolts is to try and TIGHTEN slightly to get them to move.We often had to do this on heavy earthmoving equipment to release bolts, along with lusol, heat and lots of sweary words.
