Am picking up my first Defender 110 on Wednesday.. I have a Range Rover and an chopping in a Freelander. The 110 is only 8 months old but has no sat nav/gps. Whats the best system to install and where should it be mounted. I want a decent size display and am not a lover of the cd/dvd combined unit that slides out... Any help much appreciated. Guess it's back to map reading :((

I use garmin , 1310 or1340 work well and have decent display size, mounted on to lid of ashtray in middle of windscreen , so easily removable , plug in cig socket. also work when unplugged for on foot use JMHO

I use sat nav a lot in my job and have used many of them.
For me it's either Garmin or Tom Tom.
Tom Tom are the new boys in town where Garmin have been supplying the avaition industry for around 30 years.

For day to day use and ease of use I found the Garmin the best and most reliable but if your into your toys and gismos go for the Tom Tom.
I'd get the widest screen your budget can stretch to and give the cheap and nasy makes a wide berth, there cheap for a reason.
Cheers
Chris.

pizza delivery man?

Just got a garmin 5" wide screen from halfrauds must say well impressed did a french trip few weeks back apart from operater error bloody brilliant ! On major motorway slip roads gives a 3d image and blue arrows which lane you should be in. Last week I took a certain old git from up north on a couple of green lanes and it evenn showed them up and the route we were taking

have got an old tomtom that i cant fault but have recently started using google maps on my mobile (HTC)

seems to work well enough, a bit limited for options like diversions etc but means that i dont leave it in the car either like i used to with the tomtom.

I've got a Tom-Tom, my fourth so far (they seem to last about two years) and use it all day, every day. If anything it's too good and I have driven more than my fair share of narrow country lanes, not ideal in a Sprinter van. I've screwed the bracket into the top of the dash and just remove the unit as I leave the van.

However when this one packs in I'm seriously thinking of a decent phone with sat-nav built in. It'll be one less thing to cart about (and break) in my jacket pocket.

IPhone 4 with ether, navfree, google maps or when laning I use memory map for IPhone. But I always have an aa route planner or an O/S map as that is a dam sight more reliable.

Phookin hate it when you see the fookin pikeys with chav nag stuck to the windscreen with their own spit - GET A FOOKIN MAP FFS YER SCABBY ****AHS!!!

Otherwise get a built in one - Tomtom is pretty good!

Because sh*t breaks and even though my dash mounted unit is magnetic field compensated it still gets messed up if I've got electrics operating. The second, a cheap thingy is suctioned to my passenger light and tells me if the expensive thingy on the dash is reading true.

so if they point in different directions do you beleive the expensive one or the cheap one?

think ill stick wiv me magnetized nail and a bit of string:)

Then I stop the car, get out, and check with my third compass, a hand held Silva Ranger.
It ****es off the folk behind me, but f**k 'em.
