That is also a problem, as from 2009 it is illegal to fit none type approved cats as replacements. Replacement cats MUST be to same EU type approved spec as fitted from new. None approved cats are cheap approved ones are not. Regulations mention unapproved suspension and brake mods. This could encompass a lot of things, lowered suspension none standard shocks, discs, pads, the list could be almost endless. How they would check for some mods is open to debate. But as all P38s have air suspension on their type approval, a set of coils would be a pretty obvious mod. It depends how retrospective they make it. I would think maybe they will set a date, otherwise 99% of boy racer type and a lot of off road motors would be instantly illegal. Unless the government see it as an opportunity to rid the roads of older vehicles. Would not put it past them.

if vosa is going down the type approval route then wont land rovers(all cars for that matter) retro fitted with lpg fail as its not on the type approval sheet?????

Don't know the answer to that although it is a good point. Can you retro fit gas abroad in the EU i wonder. Does anybody know? Can't think they will ban gas convertions i think they have to have a certificate of conformity now don't they. Seeing that gas is an approved fuel it stands to reason they have to allow the fitting of a system to use it. It's all speculation anyway i don't think anyone really knows what VOSA are going to drop on us. It is more or less certain that HID lamps without auto level will be banned, other than that it's still being finalised.

Update - it has just been pointed out to me that these new 2012 rules state that a cat must be present for all those cars that need a full cat test.

LPG cars of course need a non cat test so there may be a way out if you have LPG but not if you don't.

If your car was first registered as new in or after January 1993 and is capable of running off petrol think it will need a cat to be fitted. No matter what fuel it mostly runs off. Think the loop hole is being closed.

Spoken to the MOT station and they're not sure about this bit!
Key would appear to be whether the "tested as prersented" bit still applies. I can't find mention of that in the VOSA paperwork but that doesn't mean it isn't there.
If it still applies then no cat should be ok.
If it doesn't then it most definitely won't.
Getting to a stage of having to visit the MOT station before taking the car!

How would we stand with standerd cats fitted but with the contents smashed out?
And would it offer any performance benefits?

Next big aftermarket item will be immitation cats.

Hmmm! Right I'm setting up an offshore account. Everybody send me your investments!

It has been illegal since 2009 to fit a none type approved cat replacement.

Drat. Such a tease, Tony.

You can here. But it will take starship miles to pay back as like many things on the continent it costs silly money. They've been trying to push E10 (10% ethanol added to your unleaded) and even subsidised it for a while. Most Germans balked though, ignorant krauts. I've used it regularly with no ill effects. But the experiment has failed so they're going to take it off the market or remove the subsidy.
