as fett says the stones will bounce off a rubberised type coating and will just need touching up now and then,
stones hit the galv and damage it then the galv corrodes (like a white powder)
then the metal rusts,
granted it is gonna last a hell of a long time but as i said from my own personal point of view i would paint it,

i do 5000 miles a year and we have tarmac here in the uk

but i would still paint it

By all means paint it but I don't think that you could drive enough miles for stones to remove the galvanized, and if it did the rust would come off easier. The biggest problem is washing the chassis after play and pay going through all the mud, and getting in all the inassessable places and pockets. That is the fault of the frame design.

I would hope he goes laning a lot and gets good use from the landy off road, therefore its relavant . I noticed I had polished my brass axel drain plugs nicely up whilst laning the other day
