That's the way it says to do it in my copy of RAVE, except I don't have a dipstick and have to lay on my back and fill until the ATF runs out of the filler hole:mad:

Thanks mate, i did check it the other day when having probs with torque converter lock but it was still slightly warm so my readings must of been wrong (dam it) that might help my torque converter probs lol, thanks datatek:D if i was a bird id be havig a blond moment but im a bloke so im having a nob head moment lol:)

if you got dip stick just run through gears with foot on brake engine running select neutral check level on stick if low add through dip stick tube

I'm thinking of changing the fluid and filter on mine but I've been put off by the level check procedure.

Is there not a way of checking the level without having to start the car on one with a dipstick? It must take AGES to get it right with a dipstick equipped one...?

Or is that yet another stupid question from me?

you have to start car on all autos as t/c drains patially and level needs to be checked with oil pumping filling t/c ,valve block etc, does take a few minuets as you have to wait for tube to clear to get good reading, but better than laying on your back ,if you want to do it with level bung i could give you sump with one all you need to do is change it level the same on both bung or stick

No way of doing it without engine running. If your changing fluid and filter get oil warm drain it. Change filter and put 5 litres of new oil in. Then run engine move through gears and top up to suit takes about five mins. Think refill after drain is 5.8 litres.

as said, check from cold, start engine, move selector from P thru to 1 and back then check level. Top up slowly if needed, moving P to 1 and back each time....do NOT overfill!!

i have trouble with the torque convertor locking up sometimes too... mostly when things haven't warmed up yet.

Changing transmission fluid and filter was going to be my first step too (although on a 300Tdi)... i'd be interested to know if it makes a diffence to your lockup!! :D

Check ATF fuid is both clean and good level. If clean but low, top-up, if dirty replace with filter at the same time.........should make quite a difference!

I feel like a reeet noooooooob, i checked the gearbox oil when stone cold and there was non on the stick!!! it took almost a liter to put it where it should be which i didnt understand... then i figured it out... when i checked it last id allready been out and must not of let it cool down enuf, now it seems the torque conv lock might be working normal again as its locked on twice just on the small A roads, its NEVER done that before, just cant work out how its working as i thort the gearbox oil and torque converter oil are seperate???????????

I must apologise, i do have 2 posts runing on nearly the same thing... well sort of differant problems but the same answer

oil for toque convertor is fed through pump from gear box sump like using a high pressure hose on a turbine or fan ,as t/c only feeds and emptys through center thers allways oil left in it so cant be drained during oil changes ,but is exchanged constantly during running ,temp is only important in the fact that things expand when hot,a litre of oil can make difference to operation
