How do I remove the rear fog light on my 110 300tdi?

As you will know, the rear light on my 110 is held on by two nuts which are only accessable by climbing under my Landy, ensuring that wheel arch grime gets stuck in my hair whilst bits of dried mud falls down into my eyes.

So having soaked the nuts in WD40, I was surprised to find that they started to undo with considerable ease. But then I realised the bolt that the nuts are threaded onto are spinning at the same time:doh:

The heads of the nuts arent accessable as they are hidden in the rear light itself. What would you do at this point?

The heads of the M5 bolts (set screws) are held in place by a blob of molten plastic during manufacture.

As you've discovered, this breaks when you try to remove the rusted-on nuts and the bolts just turn :(

You can remove the reflector from the lamp to give you access to the bolt heads, then use Mole Grips to stop them turning.

You might have to replace the Lamps if they're too chewed-up, you could always replace them with the later NAS type.

Ive drilled away the plastic that hides the bolts, hopfully now I can grip them and get the nuts off. Cheers for the help

cold chisel

Trying to fit the new one and getting your nuts tight is far from easy if you have fingers like a fistful of dicks :)
While you have it off, take of the reflector and indicator off and give the paint a little T cut or clean... makes a nice job but one you start.......next thing you will be blanking off holes in the bodywork and putting stainless bolts through freshly touched up rear door hinges :)
