Hi

I have an oil leak, no shock I'm sure.

I've included a photo which shows circled in red where one oil leak is coming out from. I'm thinking of just pinching the bolts (circled blue) up, but don't know what they would be called in Rave?

Any other advice is welcome, I'm not a mechanic in case you never figured that out .

P.S. Would this be engine oil leaking from this gap or transmission fluid?

Depends if it's engine oil or transmission fluid. Favourite would be engine oil and rear main oil seal failing. Pinching the bolts will do no good whatsoever.

I'm thinking is more likely to be engine oil, i guess changing this seal you have suggested is a big job?

Agree with Wammers.Gearbox out, drop the rear bearing cap, replace the crucifix seal for good measure, put sealant on the mating face of the bearing cap and fit a new crank rear oil seal. If the oil seal journal is grooved where the seal runs fit a shaft repair kit from here M Barnwell Services Ltd - The UK's leading distributor of Fluid Sealing Products

Cheers for the replies, I gotta be first to admit I'm out of my depth here. Don't suppose you work for a garage and wanna do the work do you?

Or a rough idea on labour time would be good so I don't get ripped off by a garage.

At a guess...a full day**. If it's an auto, it would pay to check the condition of the "flywheel" flex plate for cracks whilst the box is out.

** Assuming they have a 4 post lift.

Good news is that the seals will cost you next to nothing, but the labour will bring tears to your eyes!!!

At my age, can' do anything "Manual" nowadays, have to rely on Automation !!

To ensure that the labour cost is kept to a minimum, don't fall for an outfit that will do it "On your drive". It will take at least 50% longer than if it's lifted up in the air on a 4 post lift and a transmission jack used to remove the g/box.
Gravity is a strange thing...the removal is easy, it's the refit that is the problem.
There is also a good independant in Birmingham, P38 and New RR specialist...Jameson 4x4, Summer Lane...been around for years and "**** hot" on them.

You have a choice to make. A main dealer cannot charge more than the standard time for the job. Don't know what that is, but around 6 1/2 hours i would think. An independent maybe less per hour but can charge as many hours as it takes him. So if he has not got the proper gear it may take 8-10 hours. So it's looking like £500.00 + either way to fit a £5.00 seal. Happy days.
