Spreading Joy & Harmony
Unusual day.

Had some starting probs with the 200tdi 90 so i know the battery isn't tip top...will be on charge in a bit.

So after not running it for 5 days i knew it was going to be a pig to start...so i pre-warmed 30 secs and cranked for about 15 secs..then i noticed an odd odour quickly followed by smoke..

:eek::eek::eek:

The brown feeds to the starter were hot hot hot and smoking!! Got a little extinguisher ready but luckily didnt combust..let it all cool down, then cleaned wiring up with a bit of wd40...

Started 1st time off the key :confused: despite the battery being nearly dead.

Now, wise people..have my poor starting issues been down to a starter motor on way out...wiring is all connected tight..or will that much pre-warm and cranking cause the hot hot hot problem??

I do have fully comp insurance so i dont want to BURN IT!!

Scary one Storm - with no extingusiher, I'd be left to P**s on mine, and knowing my luck after a night on the beer it would not help!

Can't think how that long pre-warming would have had an effect.

Logically the only reason for the brown starter wire to get that hot is if:

a) The starter is drawing more current than it should, or

b) the wire is shorting to earth

Really not sure, but could be starter solonoid on the way out. Worth just checking where the cables run from the batetry box (mine get pretty near the exhaust) and ignition switch just to make sure no chaffing, but suspect unlikely

Will watch with interest

I was thinking its the constant cranking that was the problem...should start off the key...and oddly did after the wd40 had soaked into the connections...maybe they've iced up or got a lot of salt on them causing a bad earth...i'm really not clued up on electrickery..gonna whack another charged up battery on in the morning...see if it starts better.

The constant cranking would pull current through the hefty red cable which runs directly from the battery to the starter - that's what is doing the work turning over the engine.

Yes, there would be current through the wire to the starter solnoid, but the current draw should not be high, and the cable should be able to cope - it's less power than the cables to the headlamps have to cope with!

If nothing obvious - and if no better suggestions - keep a close eye and the extinguisher handy:D

If the starter was cranking earth should be OK, but guess it takes a fair bit of abuse with road salt and slush getting thrown up onto it

when voltage in battery drops the amperage goes up there is allways a possibility of burning starter or wiring trying to start with poor battery obviously shows up more on older motor or wiring

Yeps, hoping i can put the blame solely on poor battery...have a spare on charge overnight so it'll give it the full monty off the key in the morning.

Can't see any damage to wiring, but light is fading so given up for today. there was a fair bit of smoke so i'm hoping i havent cooked the starter or melted any wiring.

Odd that it started straight off the key afterwards cos the battery was about to die when i noticed the smoke. Maybe the connection was poor and the wd40 cleaned it up..will get an answer when i try tomorrow. Bugger.

i did that to my 130 when the fuel gague broke and i ran outta fuel.ended up with a huge bill for new starter.cranked the fook outta it trying ta get fuel through.

I'll put it down to a sticky starter solenoid from not being used, and it stuck almost closed pulling alot of current.....and burnt the wiring out....either that or ****loads of resistance on the terminals. Either way sounds like its freed up and will be alright now

this sounds more likely to me than voltage drop/high amps........surely the starter will stop turning the motor before the volts drop enough for amps to get too high .......note to self......pick up extinguisher from workshop

no

i got an airlock.had to bleed the pipes at the injectors.normally it pumps up yes.

reckon i sucked thru some ****e too.had to clean lines out.:mad:

Aaah. Why didn't you just say that I wanna90 wasn't there to show you how to fix it?:p

So you had to wait for her to come home from work and get yer landy going for you?:doh:
she calls rangies gaylove trucks so not likely.id been useing iwannas 90 and had no tools as my landy ammo box was in there
defenderoffender towed me home.he commented how heavy the crate was.his tdi range struggled at the off set.:)
