Hi,

How long aprox should a 300tdi defender take to cut out when the top of a sealed snorkel is covered? As im wanting to make sure my snorkel is sealed before i go playing. but not sure how long it should take... has anyone else done this?

if you cover the snorkel and it cuts out its working, dont think there is a specific time.

if you cover the snorkel and it just keeps running then there is a leak somewhere.

tbh when you test it you will know

I wouldn't worry too much providing you have fitted it correctly and sealed it. You should hear the engine struggle a bit with lack of air but not sure it will stall.... some cling film and masking tape to the fitting on the wing (with air still in) it will draw tight if your seal is bad. I wouldn't be too worried about very slight leaks unless you plan to be submerged to the windscreen for several minutes.
A wading blanket is a good extra for reducing the amount of water and ****e getting in the engine bay... clogging radiator etc..just watch your temp gauge and remove asap.

If you cover the top then it could blow out the seals from the vacuum. Have you filled in your drain plug too?

Thanks JC. Khaos, I havent done that yet but its on the to do list when i get a minute. So are you saying i shouldn't cover the top at all as it could damage something? Sorry for my complete ignorance!

If you think how much water gets drawn in on a motorway in heavy rain without a snorkel it may ease your concerns.... have faith in your work lol. I fitted a Mantec plastic jobby that was an easy fit just to the side vent... no joining of pipes in the engine bay etc. Some people will add extentions to the breather pipes at the top of the engine bay up the side of the snorkel or inside it... I never bothered.

With regards to plugging the drain plug..... I think I am right in saying that is on the nearside wing that draws air for the heater. I never blocked mine off... I cleaned it to ensure water could run out that came through the top vent.

After sealing all my mates 200Tdi safari, it cut out within 20 secs. we used tiger seal, which worked very well but its a bugger to get apart again

I wouldn't cover it in case it breaks the seal but that's just my opinion. Have faith in yourself like someone has said before. I fitted mine, let it dry and then went straight into water at korc. I've been over bonnet deep and never had a problem. Safari snorkels stop water going down them but I still check my air box every now and again because, with no drain plug, any water that gets in will stay in. Never had any problems though.

tis a fair point, i think we were a tad hungover at the time so it didn't occur to us...
