Disco 3 would also get my vote, but from a reliability point of view, TD6 Range Rover...
Just keep it in rear hub bushes, front suspension arms and breather filters and it will just keep going and going.
As opposed to a D3, which needs front wishbones, rear wishbones, ARB bushes, EGR valves, Wheel bearings etc every 80k miles... If you get a good one, that is

I'd go for a D3 too, although I'm going to be biased.
If you pick up a pre March 06 one, the tax will only be £245, so no worries there.
Ah, I'd go for an Auto also...shouldn't have to worry about the clutch as mentioned above.
Much more comfortable than a RR as well imo.
Hurry up though, as prices for D3's seem to have started to go back up these last couple of weeks (prob due to Winter on it's way back).

Pre-06 Disco 3 would be my first choice, particularly if you are going to be keeping it for a while. The Range Rover could very easily turn into the next P38 with all the electronics starting to go wrong at that age. Saying that the Disco is also full of electronics, though being a few years younger you should get a few more years trouble free (relatively)

But if you go for an Auto, you then have to worry about your Rad leaking coolant into the ATF system, killing the Autobox. A much bigger more expensive repair...

It is very good reading.
However, you'd be a fool to run a D3 or newish RR without a warranty has so much could go wrong.
For 500 quid, you could take a warranty out which will no doubt cover the auto gearbox etc, but I'd doubt they'd cover the cost of a clutch on a manual as it is wear and tear?

We have a Disco 3 and it's perfect but personally, I'd take the Range Rover for no other reason than it's a range rover. Get a private plate and it could be only 2 years old
And you'd look like a drug dealer

Good luck finding one that will touch a D3/RRS
(That isnt a LR one @ £1400)Because of Disco 3's, Tesco's Warranty had to completely reword their policies as they were loosing too much money with D3's needing all the items previously mentioned, repaired

Dealt with them before. OK if 1 of your EGR valves fail. Leave you with the rest of the bill if they both die thoguh
Or the maximum claim limit, which pretty much rules out anything that might fail on a D3/RRS.
Oh, and wiring issues and diagnostics arent covered (though that is probably the same for every company)
