i have a disco 2 1999 model v8.. the sunroof has been fine since i got the car but last week its started to leak ,water is coming in though the screw on the handle that winds the sunroof open and sometimes its getting the roof lining wet at the front of the window screen, would it just need resealing or could it be the drain holes are blocked , i have had a look for the drain holes but cannot see them any help would be much app thanks george,,

yep theres a lot of help on there isn't there, george do you know if the last time you closed the sunroof all the windows and doors where closed first as when you close the sunroof last it will cause a suction so the sunroof will seal better, mite be worth a try before doing anything ells hope this helps.

You'll end up having to take the headlining out imho.

The problem is MOST likely due to the fact that the sealant between the sunroof plastic frame on the outside of the car and the bodywork goes hard and peels off. Mine had the same symptoms, leaking from the electric motor housing (mine's automatic, obviously...)

The other thing to check while you are there is the drain tubes and the plastic boxes they attach to as the sealant joining the boxes to the metal frame tends to go. Search for a thread describing using flashband bitumen tape to reseal it.

Hi, fixed my leaking sunroof the other day. The drain block on the passenger side of the sunroof had broke off where the drain pipe attaches to it. I managed to remove map holders, sunroof winder part etc and the handles above both doors to gain enough access to get to the problem by dropping roof lining down slightly. I glued the broken part back in position and then put a load of Butyl rubber sealant around just to make sure and re fitted drain pipe. Had loads of rain last couple days and been fine.

Only two reasons for the the sunroof to leak, both are seals.
The drain tubes fitted to sunroof are to drain water run-off should the sunroof be opened when wet, that's why the tubes are only at the front and a plastic moulding is fitted on the glass to part the water into the side channels and away via the tubes..

One bit of advice that I cannot remember reading on the help pages

use low modulus silicone to seal frame to body

it does not set solid and allows flex which is needed obviously

no difference in price but worth reading the label when you buy it

Have a look at the rubber seal between the glass sunroof and the plastic frame first.

Sometimes the water actually seeps under the seal between the seal and the track in the plastic frame that it sits in. If you see water coming up from under the seal then remove seal, clean seal and track and use a bead of good quality silicone sealer to re seat the seal. Worked for me and I had already removed the headcloth and did all the other leak modifications. You can do this without removing the glass but it is a little fiddly.

The sunroof drain tray is a disaster of a design and there is quite a large gap between the tray and the winder mechanisn which I closed up with a metal plate and a bead of sealer. The roof blind holes are also a source of leaks if any water got in around this area as it can leak through the plastic clip holes. Water can also leak through the screw holes holding the drain tray to the top plastic roof section and various other holes in the frame along with the usual train tube problems.

Roof lining is simple to remove but time consuming although it makes the job very easy to do and if you have roof bars remove them and remove the steel washer under the mounting foot and replace it with an "O" ring for NO MORE LEAKS there either.

I did the works on both of mine and the roof bars and no leaks since for over a year now.
PS Northern Ireland must be the wettest place in the world as well!!
