My TD5 shredded it's fanbelt and it turned out the alternator had lost it's top bracket and bolts!

Got new bracket, bolts and belt. Fitted them but when I started it up the alternator started to twist! When the engine was shut off the alternator twisted further and threw the belt.

I can hardly see the alternator and am having trouble removing the viscous fan as I can't hald the pulley tight enough to undo it.

Can antone tell me the easiest way to get the alternator to check it's other fixings as I've come to the conclusion that's the problem, another loose or missing bolt!

The only routes to get near the unit looks to me to require either removing the rad and fan or the inlet manifold, i'd rather avoid either but have got to get it sorted before Sunday with only tomorrow off work before then.

the alternator has 2 securing bolts at top and bottom, u can see both of them if u have enough space to look/work around the pulley.....(as u know the alternator goes together with the vacuum pump on the same pulley).....i didnt do it myself but i think it's enough just to remove the viscous unit.

I've had a response on another forum that has suggested the fan plus the driver's side intercooler hose so I'll try with just the fan and if not remove the hose. I'll post the result on both forums incase anyone else needs to know.

No, alternator fine. Not sure what caused it. I think the top flatbar bracket shook lose and fell of allowing the alternator to be twisted by the preasure of the belt tensioner. However I've now got what initially sounds like a knocking tappet but can find nothing wrong in the head. The knock could be coming from one of the pumps to the nearside of the engine! Hey-Ho the fun of owning a Landy!
