Planning on doing an oil change on the landy this morning. Both engine oil and gearbox oil.

As I dont have a manual I have no idea what oil I need and how much is needed.

Anyone able to help?

Probably circa 4.5 litres, as a guess!!

My haynes does not cover 2.0 mpi

either go on castrol website and do a vehicle search, or opieoils.co.uk, or stick 4 litres in (which is plenty for a 2.0 engine), start it up and tickover for a minute (check the oil pressure light goes out) and then allow 5 minutes for the engine to drain down and do a dipstick method.

It is usually 1 litre between low and high on the dipstick.

Gearbox takes a couple of litres of ATF, or whatever you choose to use.

Oh, I'd use something like a 5w40 or 10w40 semi-synthetic in that engine.

What about the gearbox? Universal gearbox oil in both gearbox and transfer box?

Well...

I use ATF in my lt77 gearbox, is yours a reverse up left or reverse down right?

Some people choose MTF94 for their r380 gearboxes.

The transfer case and axles take ep80/90 gear oil, must be GL4 not GL5. Couple of litres in each.

The front swivels can also tale gear oil, but they should nowbe drained and filled with one shot grease.

Let me know what gearbox you have!

Reverse up left.

Castrol says 2.7 litres of SMX-S for gearbox and 2.3 Litres of LT 230/230Q for the transfer box.

Its all greek to me!!

Right, well the capacities are correct I imagine.

To translate, I use ATF dexron3 in my reverse up left (LT77) gearbox and EP80 GL4 gear oil everywhere else. Bar the engine, although I am tempted!

Well I have done the engine oil change but Halfords didnt have enough gearbox oil so that and the transfer box will have to wait. The tappity engine definitely sounds better to me!!

Looking under the gear box there is a round hole which is in the position I would have expected the gearbox drain plug to be in. I hope it hasnt been just left out?

Where are the drain and filler plugs located?

After putting the engine oil in I can hear air escaping from what I think is the rocker cover, back corner under the inlet manifold. There is oil on the side of the engine on that side too so I am assuming its related.

Could it be the headgasket? I have checked all the plugs and they are all evenly burnt and the colour looks spot on - would this mean the headgasket is fine?

alright mate , i have an mpi also unfortunantely so from the rave cd the information i have is as follows .
engine 10w40 4.9 litres plus 0.4 litres if use new filter
gearbox
atf dexron11D 2.7 litres ( make sure you have the torx bit for the filler before you loose the oil out ! )
transfer box ep90 2.3litres
axle / cdiff ep90 1.7 litres in each

this is probably where the wading plug fits ...it made me think there was something missing when i first looked.

and my rocker cover gasket went on the back corner too , dunno if it is a common fault on these engines ..... watch for your manifold bolts coming loose giving an exhaust blow at the manifold gasket too ....

Cheers mate. Changing the engine oil has made a definite improvement to the tappityness!! Thanks for the oil info - much appreciated.

I will address the rocker cover gasket as I deffo think this is where the hiss is coming from. I guess if I take the oil filler cap off the hiss should disappear if its the rocker cover gasket.
