A friend's Defender rear door keeps shattering the glass because the spare weight twists the frame when off-road. I wouldn't add a hi-lift's weight as well on a Def. The Disco 2 door is apparently a bit stronger but still, the weight can't help? I've seen Discos with the door dragging on the bumper from just the spare.
There is a nice swing-away carrier for the Defender that can take all the weight and also provide a holder for a hi-lift up the side. But on a Disco, it seems that would require a new bumper plus a swinging spare mount just as a start - £££.
Bullbars are illegal now but some people mount a hi-lift across a bullbar when offroading. Or across the front or rear bumpers.
I had one mounted on a Defender 110 roofrack and that's OK but adds to the roof weight, where you don't want it.
It depends on what you intend on doing, I suppose. If it's constant use then you want it to be readily available. If it's only in-case-of-trouble, I'd try fitting it inside. Keeps it cleaner, too. Mine never works with some WD-40 and a bash from the wheel wrench as the mechanism gets gooped up.

My 5ft HiLift is inside, keeps it MAINLY clean.....
Mines a 3dr (Not sure if that makes any difference?)...if you imagine sitting on the back seats its strapped down (onto the bar the seat hinges on)just behind the backs of the knees...
If strapped tightly, its out of the way, doesnt move & stays clean(ish)

Down here we either fix it to a roof-rack (down one side out of the dust/mud), or fix it to a cargo barrier. There's a few people who attach it to their spare wheel and don't find any issue with it over the harsh corrugations...so long as you're not hammering over them like a tool, I can't see the slight extra weight being any issue mate.

thanks for finding that ebay link Panzer, i had looked on ebay, but for whatever reason found nothing!
as far as weight is concerned, i would have thought it would be ok on a disco at least because they have that v shaped locator above the latch, which takes the weight.
i have a rear ladder for when the roofbox is on and the door is quite sturdy
however, i was at parkwood last weekend and spotted a brigade of disco owners with the spare wheel carriers removed, a sight at which i scratched my head and wondered what i was missing out on...
the other problems are the fact that your jack gets weathered outside, and may get nicked. my disco always seems to get caked inside when we do pay n play days, so i try to carry minimal gear - but for trekking etc it could live happily inside with the rest of my gear.
it also looks cool outside, is nice and accessible, and wont get in the way.
the wizardbilt one also has a locking option, which is handy.

My mum (who likes to come off roading!) who finds it hard to get in'n'out (despite the small folding plastic step, on a bit of string so it can be retrieved from the floor, whilst in the seat
) doesnt find it gets in the way at all...doesnt touch her feet/legs/nuffink....I will try to get a pic tonight & post.
Never thought of that, have to have a look how to do it.
Straps around the seat tubes....Not sure what/where I got the straps from, but a kinda non-elasticated version of:

I don't mind mine being on the spare wheel mount, but it does get awkward to use and remove when it cruds up ...
