hello landyzone can anyone say anything good about range rover p38 4.6 hse for road and off road useor shall i just forget it and buy a disco 1 any addvice welcome
If you have a pot of gold buried somewhere in the garden buy a P38 if you want to enjoy yourself for a lot less money buy the Disco. The P38 (when it's running) is a lot better drive than the Disco. But Disco's don't fail as often, they are nowhere near as complex as the P38.
disco 1 mate,all day long,p38-bag of ****2.5 slow,thirsty,head gaskets can go,cracked heads etc,then theres 4.0/4.6-again eas problems,liners can slip,blend motors etc etc need i go on.now it just so happens i have a 3.9 lpg disco 1 which may be surplus to requirementsgiz a bell if interested,i need to make room for my p38.cheers craig

If you wanna "Off Road" then Disco ALL DAY LONG It would pull a house down & then turn round & Stomp on the bricks fer fun!!!!!
Pics below are my "TOYS" ..... I sold the Disco to buy the P38 ....I think I had a touch of Alzheimer’s at the time, P38 is very nice though.
I've had Disco's fer 10 years Disco Tdi 200 & 300 (V8) I always fancied a P38 so when I got offered this one fer £1750 I took his hand off
(Didn't look like the pic when I got though ... bit of a DOG!! A few weeks & a couple of hundred quid & shes NEARLY THERE!!!)
The most striking difference between the two (Mechanical wise) is the lack of a "Diff Lock" on the P38 ......P38's have "Viscous couplings" (which I know to my cost as mine is seized ATM & I've had to remove my front prop until I get it repaired)
Horses fer Courses really, I would not dream of "Off Roading" a P38 (Far too complicated to fix)........... Disco... Oh Yeah!!! I'd drive it into the local river & out the other side without even blinkin!!!!

P38 are supposed to be brilliant off road... mine lives firmly on the tarmac coz its too nice to scratch or dent... if off roadings your bag and you want a nice car for everyday use to get a disco with a nice interior. for pure pleasure and oneupmanship range rover any day !!!

Well I regularly off road my P38 - I can't see the point in owning a 4x4 if you don't use it off road.
Mine is my only car and I specifically bought it to combine a decent on road drive with decent off road capability and I've not been disappointed in either respect. A lot more comfortable than my old Series III!
I've found it to be very capable off road even in standard form. All I've done to mine is put some AT tyres on it and it's brilliant.
The one area where they're not so great off road is with deep water - they have a lot of electrics on them, but as long as you're sensible they're great.
BTW Hooded Claw, yours looks very nice. Looks like you got a real bargain there, even with the VCU problem! Get it muddy!!!

Have had my P38 4.6HSE for 3 years now and the car is absolutely fantastic offroad. Best thing with it is ground clearance and power of the V8/torque to really get you out of the mud etc. Plus cabin much more luxurious than a disco 1 and prices are low if buying in the summer!
Just make sure you get proper offroad tyres and not road tyres which is a mistake many people make. Doesn't matter what car you have, if there is no traction you're going nowhere! lol.

I have got both a P38 & a Classic, I use the classic for most of the towing of my trailers and off road work and the P38 for the family taxi although she has ventured off road a couple of times.as regards to them both I cant fault either of them in there capabilities on and off road but the P38 is that much more complicated if it goes rong. Disco one's are the same under the scin as RR Classic's with a bit more refinement and in some cases are cheeper to repare than a Disco parts wise.At the end off the day it is your choice and if you choose well you shouldnt regret it I know after having several Series 3's it was nice to have some creature comforts when driving without loosing any off road capability.

Back on topic, I wouldn't say P38s are necessarily complicated. They certainly are prone to problems but usually these are not all that hard to solve. The thing is, it was a top-of-the-line luxury car and expected to be maintained as such. In return you get a ride quality and road presence that IMHO is still hard to beat. And yes, they can offroad something fierce! Just be very choosy when buying or you'll end up paying for whatever TLC the previous owners had skimped.
ps. with regards to driving through water... for two years i crossed a little stream every day to and from work. Not too deep, between 10 and 15 inches depending on rain. Enough to dip the rad, sump, diffs, steering and suspension bits etc. This was EVERY day, twice a day and never had a problem. Of course if I'd needed to go much deeper I'd have kitted her out for wading. Just common sense.
