1998 Range Rover P38 4.0 with LPG (picture heavy)

I've listed the vehicle on eBay also and you can find the listing here. Range Rover 4.0 V8 petrol/LPG | eBay The car is taxed until the end of April and has MOT until the 23rd of March of next year. The car breezed its MOT and its only advisories were for slightly corroded brake lines and the...

    Fuel Pump

I think the pumps in the vehicles are pretty much a standard size. Usually, the sender units are the things that are of a different size. Best thing to do is check the RAVE manual to see what the part numbers are, and to see if there is an exploded diagram of the sender unit.

yet more problems, 3.5 efi cut out now wont start.

Have you, or anyone else, changed the fuel pump in it at any point? I ask because on some after market pumps, the pick ups in them are sometimes a little shorter than the originals and cause a fuel starvation issue when going around corners. The issue doesn't seem to manifest itself much, if at...

    Genuine VS. non-genuine

I think the need for "genuine" parts are more applicable to performance vehicles. I own a Volvo V40 T4 and i've found that basic service parts that are non-genuine tend to hold back the performance of the vehicle. For instance, i use genuine Volvo spark plugs in it as even the top end Iridium...

Head gasket gone, now the battle of the exhaust bolt (one of them anyway)

Thanks Iann. I think i can call this job solved. It's been a couple of days since the water pump was replaced and so far, the car has kept its coolant and remained at an even running temperature. Even in traffic. I also sorted a running issue with my LPG where it wouldn't even run a distance...

Head gasket gone, now the battle of the exhaust bolt (one of them anyway)

Quick update everyone. I changed the water pump yesterday and since then the car seems to be fine. The temperature needle stayed centered through the journey both me and the wife took today, which was quite a distance, and I checked the top radiator hose as soon as we pulled onto a car park at...

Head gasket gone, now the battle of the exhaust bolt (one of them anyway)

Hi, Its running the standard viscous fan and it works fine. I used a piece of tissue paper to see if it would draw it in and it did. I think I've found the problem. I noticed that there was a wet streak under the bonnet and the water pump seemed to be making a lot of noise. After a few...

Head gasket gone, now the battle of the exhaust bolt (one of them anyway)

The mrs went to her mums today, which is about 100 miles from where we live currently. Car had no issues. Her journey back wasn't so uneventful however as around 30 miles in the car started to overheat while in slow moving traffic. She pulled over and allowed the car to cool down before...

Head gasket gone, now the battle of the exhaust bolt (one of them anyway)

Ok, Here is an update on the car. I've taken it to the garage as i just haven't had the time to sort out the issue, if i can call it that, myself. I popped into the garage earlier today to drop off my other motor and i asked what they had found. Surprisingly, they told me that they had the...

Head gasket gone, now the battle of the exhaust bolt (one of them anyway)

How i could i test for a cracked block? It had been fine up until today so i am kind of concerned why now and what's the cause. I think i'm going to bite the bullet and take into my local garage. Goodness knows what the cost will be but time will tell i guess.

Head gasket gone, now the battle of the exhaust bolt (one of them anyway)

Would it manifest itself as a slight water leak or as a jet of steam?

Head gasket gone, now the battle of the exhaust bolt (one of them anyway)

I had a good look over the block once the heads were off, as i know how these engines can be prone to such things. There was no evidence to suggest that i had a cracked block and i went over all of it, using a bit of dirty oil, to try and highlight any cracks or marks. I'm wondering if the head...

Head gasket gone, now the battle of the exhaust bolt (one of them anyway)

And around, and around, and around it goes. The mrs has just walked in and told me that the temp gauge in the car has shot straight up. I got her to open the bonnet and you could hear the hissing sound of water boiling. The top hose was rock hard again and i am now at a loss to understand what...

Head gasket gone, now the battle of the exhaust bolt (one of them anyway)

Right. The car went for quite a run yesterday and all is well engine wise. The only problem I have now is with my LPG system. My motor just isn't running when the LPG system is switched on. Now that the the outstanding issues seemed to have been resolved, I am planning on taking it to a...

Head gasket gone, now the battle of the exhaust bolt (one of them anyway)

Oh, I forgot to ask. I noticed that the top hose was quite firm the other day but the car showed no signs of overheating like it did when the head gasket had gone. Is this normal?

Head gasket gone, now the battle of the exhaust bolt (one of them anyway)

I think I've cracked it. I had to take the fuel rail back off today as the injector for cylinder no. 3 had a very slight leak and I could see it was damp. After fitting the old seals back on (I had new ones on them which came with the gasket kit) I set about checking all the earths. I cleaned...

    It's finally gone bang!

But wouldn't it expose, or eliminate depending on your perspective, the possibility of it being part of the problem?

    It's finally gone bang!

Have you tried putting in the correct 10/40 oil in and running the car since the issue first occurred? I'd hazard a guess that the current oil is an issue.

    Failed her MOT today

I wouldn't touch a Kwik-Fit with someone else's barge pole. Independent garages/MOT centres are the places to go. Or, if you want a certain guarantee of a no bull#hit test, take it to a local council centre. They can't refuse members of the public from having their vehicles tested there. They...
