Been looking this up quite a bit as it interests me. Hydraulic lifters/tappets for the Rover V8.

So obviously when something goes wrong people complain about things and you don't really hear about the things that went well or didn't fail - unless someone specifically mentions it.

Again, obviously genuine hydraulic lifters are the best way to go but as I said above, it interests me. There are countless threads online with noisy tappets/lifters and the advice is to use genuine ones.

But there's part of me that says, is there anyone out there that has had a good experience with non-genuine tappets? There has to be?

That and if you bought non genuine lifters and they were noisy what would be the result of going back to the supplier and telling them they're faulty... get new sets until you get a good set? Is there such a thing as non-faulty non-genuine Rover V8 tappets?

yes..i have..

genuine not needed..but oe is.

Now I'm curious... what about camshafts? Would OEM be okay? Not that I'm considering slinging in a new cam in my engine or anything... ;)

get a shagged block then :p

A shagged block in my eyes requires new liners or +10/20 thou rebore... I know we own Land-Rovers but some of us aren't made of money! Was just a thought I had thats all.

i shouldnt think genuine tappets are genuine ,like most parts for obsolete units, you can still buy lucas injector nozzles but there made in poland and poor so are only genuine by name not quality

You can pick up a block from the scrappy for £30 though ;) and then britpart it! See what breaks first, water pump, belts, timing chain, head gaskets etc :p

Very cynical, I mean realistic james!

Would be interesting to find out the differences between decent parts and absolutely crap parts, just machining tolerances or what... The mind boggles how some things can be so bad?

"The Cheapest Rover V8 Rebuild Ever"

Then see what breaks first yeah you're right!!!

its usually quality of the metal and hardening i find more than tolerances, you can see the difference , ive just fitted a set of britpart tappets recently customer supplied so ill see how long they last

Right excellent, real life experiment... Keep us updated! Can have any more information on the parts put in, kept original push rods, new cam as well or what? Details please if you can! :D

just tappets ,original cam and push rods ,not my idea , but an extremely nice classic ,and a bloke who takes much care which is surprising he insisted on just tappets

I think the need for "genuine" parts are more applicable to performance vehicles.

I own a Volvo V40 T4 and i've found that basic service parts that are non-genuine tend to hold back the performance of the vehicle.
For instance, i use genuine Volvo spark plugs in it as even the top end Iridium plugs from NGK have an adverse reaction at top end speeds.

MAF sensors are the same too.
I was trying to diagnose an issue on my car and found that when i used a non genuine MAF, it caused the car to throw up all sorts of sensor issues related to it.
It also pointed out that i had an intermittent fault on one of my O2 sensors.
And those things, even though they're not cheap, also need to have genuine Volvo parts too.

So i would say that unless you are running an RR sport or some kind of supercharged RR, i wouldn't worry so much about using non-genuine parts.
