Just a thought, have you checked the starter is bolted on nice and tight. If it's loose(ish) the earth to the starter will be poor. Could be the same if starter is very oily or corroded where it fits to the engine block.

Forgot to mention - always disconnect the battery before working on glow plugs. If you have a faulty relay (re your other thread) the cables could still be live, even when the ignition is off. Try running without the glow plug relay, if it starts it may solve both your probs until warmer times.

Did you insulate the cables from the No3 plug? If these touch earth (bare metal) its bad news. You would need a cable fom No2 to No4 plug to run on three plugs, also the feed cable would need to be connected (prob to No2 or No1).

If its tight and not leaking compression why not leave it until warmer weather. 300tdi should start fine on 3 glow plugs.

Had the same problem last year with my 300tdi (manual). Battery going flat in a few hours but not all the time. Sometimes it was ok for days. The bottom line was a faulty glow plug RELAY, the spring inside had gone weak. I found it eventually by connecting a 12V LED onto the glow plug link...

Sounds like a new fob battery needed. If you've got the hand book check for more info. Also check courtesy light door / tailgate switches and bonnet switch.

Both have two button fob ! I thought 200Tdi one button, 300TDi two button....... But I could be wrong:doh:! Both mine are 300TDi with two button fob:). Paul.

Could be moisture on door / tailgate /bonnet switces (or corrosionnnnn).

I think thats only on the later models e.g. my N reg makes no noise, my S reg makes a double peep from the alarm. Paul.

I fancy trying the "creeping crack cure" on my new one. Problem is people say it has to be dry. Can someone remind me to do it in the summer! P.S. Will it creep down under the bonnet, and fix a cracked head???

This may be a daft question, but have you changed the air filter - is it a decent quality one? are the pipes clear?

Thanks Mike, You've probably guessed it's not gonna be a rush job. I'm planning carefully and trying to make sure it's only going to be done once. As I mentioned before when I searched 300TDi head gaskets a good few people were not happy with craddocks gaskets, so it maybe main dealer part...

Check door / tailgate switches (courtesy light) and also bonnet switch. e.g. if i set alarm with bonnet up, hazards don't flash. Close bonnet later while alarm still set and they will flash to let me know everything is finally closed. Both my disco's do this and it's mentioned in the hand book...

Not sure of their name but I've heard theres a land rover place in or near Rhodesia, Worksop. Otherwise have a good look on ebay. Prices vary quite a bit, even on cheap parts.
