Does anybody know whether there is a filter in the tank that can affect the pressure from the pump? Leaving an open end from the engine fuel filter and running the pump (new) the fuel does not spurt out. Could this be the starting problem?

Freelander TD4. Have been having starting difficulty when hot. Tries to fire but does not run. Changed the fuel pressure sensor (£100) but still has the problem. Where should I look next? ANY IDEAS PLEASE.

I have a 2.5 D NA ex MOD . Have sleeved and bored back to standard the bottom end . I have low compression on all cylinders and lots of black smoke (unburnt diesel? ) Have I missed something in the valve timing setup?
