it was a blocked rad, new one fitted as it had had it, everything was fine until i switched the lights on and the gauge went back into the red, turns out the earth from chassis to engine and corroded itself off at the engine side, new earth strap fitted and everything is sorted :) cheers for...

cheers mate, i know the gauge is reading correct as i can smell a burning engine in the cab also the heater blows red hot air....although the coolant doesn't boil the top hose is very hot all the way to thermostat housing then stone cold after that and the head is red hot, it has to be the ****...

problem still not solved, every time there is a thermostat in the car it overheats!!! ran it without the thermostat, all pipes got warm inc expansion tank, gauge just under half, put new stat back in and gauge goes back up to red!!! what the hecks going on, starting to think something might be...

turns out someone had put the wrong thermostat in... and me being an idiot didn't realise that it was wrong, it didn't have the spring and extra plate and when i tested it it didn't do anything in hot water, neither did the one before that, euro car parts have got the wrong thermostat on the...

i can run the engine hot into the red but the coolant in the expansion tank stays cold, the hoses are fairly easy to squeeze, as if the water pump isn't circulating anything, i flushed the rad yesterday with new coolant in, stayed the same

+1 serpentine belt, i had the same problem, turned out to be a loose belt.... i undid the alternator bolts and got a bar in between the alternator and engine and pulled it tight as i did the bolts back up, problem never returned
