hello, the gauge on my dash says the engine is scorching, the coolant from the rad in the top hose is hotsish but not scalding, is hot up to the thermostat, hot past the thermostat, hot in the water pump, but after the water pump its cold along with the coolant in the expansion tank, does this indicate a broken or faulty water pump?

Is the coolant circuit pressurising when your engine is running?

You can tell this by running te engine and then very carefully removing the expansion tank cap. Use a rag over the top to prevent scalding.

When was the last time you thoroughly flushed the cooling system?

It could be that you have a build up of crap in the stat, radiator and heater matrix.

i can run the engine hot into the red but the coolant in the expansion tank stays cold, the hoses are fairly easy to squeeze, as if the water pump isn't circulating anything, i flushed the rad yesterday with new coolant in, stayed the same

turns out someone had put the wrong thermostat in... and me being an idiot didn't realise that it was wrong, it didn't have the spring and extra plate and when i tested it it didn't do anything in hot water, neither did the one before that, euro car parts have got the wrong thermostat on the system for my reg,

problem not solved, ran it without the thermostat and it ran fine, new thermostat back in and back to overheating,, whenever there is a thermostat in the land it overheats.... whats going on!!!

If you suspect the water pump, turn over the engine briefly with the fuel solenoid disconnected and top pipe from the water pump disconnected. If coolant is propelled far and wide, all is well.

Or with the engine running, slacken off one of the heater hoses until you get a bit of a leak - leak should increase when you rev engine.

Beware hot coolant!

Mine was only over heating when towing or on the motorway, but I noticed it warmed up quick, slowly this got worse as in it got hotter and quicker, the plastic inpeller had worn down and wasn't producing the flow that was needed, not had a problem since.

It's the part of the pump which moves the water. Normally made of metal so does not wear.

Yup, a impeller is enclosed, a propeller is exposed like on an outboard motor of a boat,

Mine had been fit with a cheep plastic one which wore out,

Visibly nothing ti really look at npbut after I fur a new one it was fine, I'll find a pic I took.
