Hi all,
Having a slight issue with a series 3 gearbox, seemingly suddenly cannot engage reverse, the lever was blocking reverse entirely, no noises or anything.
i was able to get into reverse again then after a drive it's gone again!
in the video you should see the assembly butting up against a collar that looks like it should move??

any help would be greatly appreciated,
Callum :)

Cannot see the video, but its not unkown for stones to get into the linkage and screw things up.

thats the trust washer it should slide along the shaft, if the 2 interlocks are sat between the selectors 2 shafts will have to be in neutral to move the 3rd

all of the rollers and balls were out at that stage. even so, the 1-2 and 3-4 rods were in neutral :)
what could stop the thrust washer from sliding? is there anything that can come dislodged?

many thanks,
Callum

nothing unless the bronze washer has worn to nothing a bits are jamming the steel washer

must be a weakness I’ve had that too

It's not until you have to shift using a pair of mole-grips clamped onto the stump of the lever that you realise the amount of leverage required, which is why the lever is so long.
nb: the 'temporary' welded gear lever was still intact when I sold the LR a couple of years later ;)

I wonder if I bought it?! When I got my first series I didn't really think it through and assumed that the stick was welded as standard. When it snapped again the truth dawned - as did the fact that I had no grips with me. Managed to get it into 2nd and limped home.

If you can remember the reg # I can tell you if it was mine ;)
L ('73) reg. 109, blue when I sold it.

R reg 88 - which is fortunate - I really didn't want to use a public forum to call out your welding.....
