So I need a new water pump on my 2001 TD4.

The one that is on was fitted just about 12 months ago, and is now shot. This was an after market one and not a Landrover one. It was fitted by my local independent LR guy.

So do i fit another aftermarket pump or a Landrover sourced one. There is a difference of £100 on rimmer bros.

Are all after market water pumps crap? or am i just unlucky?

:decision: :decision:

For the water pump considering how big a job it is to fit etc then I would go genuine as the parts warranty covers labour and consequential damage and under eu law is covered for two years.

No brainer really!

it started making a noise, so i looked once we arrived where we where going.

Had a look around, noticed that the belt was loose. Noticed water leaking out, when i moved the belt.

Checked water pump pulley, i can rock it on its own bearings.

Put belt back on, started it up, 20seconds later it threw the belt of the pump again.

I'm really annoyed that pump is only a year old, and cos it a pain, its not a cheap job to have done.

Going to get another pump and have a bash at changing it myself. Car is still where I left if a looks like its going to stay there until the end of the week.

Thats a major failure! overtightened belts can increase wear on pump and alternator bearings but that is beyond this.
Any chance you can get it replaced on warranty? though guessing if this ones failed so badly you wont want the same brand again!

Have a read on here :
TD4 coolant pump replacement

Have seen the threads and know that its a bitch of a job.

I will give the garage a call on Tuesday, but i assume that they will deny responsibly anyways. i will also have to pay to get the car recover to them.

Was thinking of ordering an LR pump from Famous Four and having a go myself.

If it were mine I would only by a genuine LR water pump. The time it takes to replace the water pump on a kv6 justifies the extra cost. Not sure how long it takes on a Td4 engine.

Peeps on here reckon about 4 hours if you don't do it the official way.

Land Rover quote 7 hours labour I seem to remember being told

The drive belt is on an automatic tensioner. There is no way to change the tension.

Did everyone read post #7 on the link I posted ?

How many times do I have to explain that Land Rover do not make most parts...they are bought in from outside suppliers. All they do is bolt the bits together, get a tin of paint and a brush for the bodywork and then push them off the end of the assembly line.
For those that care to take the time and trouble to delve deeper...you may be quick enough to decry Britpart, but they also sell genuine OEM , LR parts, not in a fancy box for less than the Main Stealers with a full guarantee.
A replacement OEM part from the likes of Allmakes, Bearmach and Britpart is just as good as LR and has the same warranty period. I bought a Water Pump from a local Main Stealer a few years ago and it did less than 3000 miles, when I came to claim, they didn't want to know "Fair wear and tear" they said.
Just go to a reputable LR parts dealer and tell them exactly what you want, quality wise...I find Brit-car very good for this.

I sort of get what you are saying but there is much more to it - Whilst Land Rover will not trouble themselves with making small, discreet components like water pumps etc. they will have the strictest QA standards of anyone and they will have the ability and personnel to walk into component manufacturers factories and inspect and test samples etc. Therefore if you buy the genuine LR part from the dealer I think it is fair to say that in most cases you are less likely to have problems than with another supplier - but there is a premium to pay for that. Don't forget the TD4 engine is bought in from BMW so the water pump will be from one of their suppliers, but they too will have the same processes to ensure quality.

With regard to OEM parts I am always very wary of these as in the small print they are sometimes described as "OEM" quality, I have also come to know that whilst some manufacturers supply LR directly it may not be the parts you are buying. In some ways it is a lottery but I do think the situation is better than it was say 10 years ago.

With regard to the original question about the water pump - given the criticality to the life of the engine for a part like this I would always look at genuine parts. If you were on the operating table having a new heart valve or hip joint - what would want the doctor to use?

I have used both genuine and OEM LR parts over the past 25+years and have been let down by geuine parts on a few occaisions. Most Stealers look at DIY repairers akin to Boldrick when you try to get a replacement under warranty. I have found the quality OEM parts to be excellent and I have, and will, continue to put full faith into them.
I have yet to find a brake shoe/pad facility at Solihull (Or soon to be India) but I have seen pallets being delivered to them by Ferodo & Mintex, neither do they mould their own tyres.....I must try and get a set of genuine Land Rover brand when mine are next due for a change:hysterically_laughi

You are of course taking the ****? Landrover and quality control are two mutually exclusive expressions, you only have to look at the failure rate of their products be it Freelanders, P38's, L322's or the latest Sport.
As for the comparison with hip joints, some of those used by the NHS have an appalling failure rate:mad:

Nice one Keith...why didn't I think of that !!!!
Obviously, he has full faith in the quality of LR products and the "Reliability ??" of their cars which must be on a par with Rolls Royce or is it Lada ??
