Noticed this blanked off Tee ???

Following purchase of the TD4 and previous posts, I decided to strip out the PCV which on removal, found the filter element to be rock solid with crap. I have a BMW one on it's way to me following good advice from Sinvogel.
Whilst removing the top covers however, I noticed what I think is a vacuum pipe with a teepiece fitted and one leg of the tee had been blanked off with a pop rivet !!:eek:
I have attached a photo with the tee outlined in yellow...can anyone enlighten me as what-if anything was connected to the blanked off leg.

I'm thinking that is possibly someones pretty crude way of trying to de-activate the EGR.

What I would do would be to replace the T-joint with a little metal peg of the type that comes in the 'bag of bits' from IKEA used to hold up shelves in a cupboard unit.

That stops the solenoid from activating the EGR.

This is the pipe you block off to de-activate the EGR , don't know where the over one go's ?
 
if you start messing with the vacume pipe you will end up with very hard brakes and you will not be able to stop almost on down hill , you will be standing up to stop the car.
 
Why does the pipe coming off the T-piece go over the top of the injectors? I don't have any vacuum running past the diesel return pipes. It's like they have used a t-piece to extend the pipe to go somewhere different or via a different route. Where does the other end go?

I didn't get chance yesterday to follow the pipe as it started to get dark, it goes round the back of the oil filler neck. I will do a more detailed search today and update. The teepiece will be knackered anyway if I have to reconnect the pipe as it's plastic and removal of the pop rivet will probably wreck it. I will measure the size of the hose and get a new one before I reconnect the pipe.

Followed the pipe and the other end goes to what seems like some sort of valve which is located on the rear of the engine block at the l.h. side (Looking in from the front).

On a different note...the new PCV came today and I have fitted it. Wen I started the engine, blue smoke came out of the exhaust for a while and then cleared-would this be the residue burning off in the exhaust ? Took it for a run and all seems fine. When I remove the dipstick with the engine on tickover, the oil no longer comes up the dipstick tube so that's a good sign !! :):)

vacuum system :
brake servo
turbo vanes - solenoid, diaphram, vent filter
egr valve - solenoid, diaphram

I'm a dummy at the moment regarding the bits & pieces on the TD4 engine.

I don't fancy the idea of the tee with a pop rivet jammed in it, so I will get a plastic or brass connector and replace it to tidy it up. There is not enough length on the hose to reach the tee where it comes off the main line.

Any thoughts on the smoke after first starting following the PCV renewal ??

Looking under my bonnet yesterday and I noticed that a feed from the vacuum pump goes to the front of the ribbed cylinder (I assume a buffer chamber) Then a pipe goes out the back of the chamber and across the back of the engine and feeds down to the turbo vane control solenoid. Therefore they have bypassed the chamber and rerouted over top of engine, maybe? Anyway - found something to look out for.

My pipe running across back of engine had drooped down and was getting caught in the steering arm, which was slowly squashing and rubbing the pipe away :( I have moved the pipe away and back approximately where it was for the photo.

I tyeraped it up to the IRD breather pipe to keep it up out of the way.

With the vacuum been shared to turbo,egr and brake servo I assume any leaks or pipes just taken off will alter brake performance!

having looked at the photo again there is supposed to be another pipe coming of the t piece and going onto the vacume chamber behind it

To the VNT actuator ;)

In reply to the OP, someone has blanked off the vacuum canister, probably due to a split canister
