Hi has anyone had water gather in the drivers side foot well ive had my 1998 freelander about a year and at times had a musty smell from tha drivers side carpet so today i got around to having a look under the carpet to find about 2cm of water swimming about and soaked into the foam under the carpet has anyone any ideas as to where it could be comming from.

Water is usually found in the passenger footwell and is invariably the heater matrix leaking - i suppose it could go into the drivers side.

Could also be worth checking driver's side door seals.

Water from the heater matrix, coolant, has a distinct smell, but taste it and it should be mega sweet, if it's that then check all hoses, heater control valve for leaks before you rip out the matrix. I guess if you were leaking into the footwell then the levels must be low.
If it's a rain-water leak then unless its a common fault you might have to rip out some of the interior and search with a torch and mirror. To seal the leak use the stuff for bonding windscreens, or Sikaflex, bonds in 24 hours but don't get it on yer hands, interior or the kids since it takes weeks to get it off. Silicone is crap, ok for bathrooms.
Sikaflex also makes a good bonder for panels, used to use it for trailer load rails.

coolant should contain a bitterizer to stop it from being drunk, should taste bitter.

i had a similar problem on my last car, it turned out to be the condensate from the aircon not being able to drain away, i found the drain tube in the engin compartment blocked and the condensate was finding its way out of the unit in the car interior, good luck

oh i forgot to mention i found the leak by running the engine with the aircon on and looking under and around the heater where i saw it was dripping , i was amazed atthe amount of water the aircon took out of the air ,
many thanks for all your idea`s regarding water in the drivers side footwell ive checked the passenger side footwell and under the carpet and all seems well as the carpet is bone dry i dont have air con so no problems in that direction ive also checked the rear wiper water pipe that runs under the drivers side carpet and thats ok ive also run water down the windscreen grill where the windscreen wiper arms are to see if any water was getting in but nothing so im at a bit of a loss on this one should i find the problem ill post it on here.

The door seals are worth checking. All four door seals on my car were off in places when the car was delivered. They just push back on.

Pull the interior door panel off (3 screws) and clipped on
Check the clear plastic membrane thats stuck to the door frame, If its in any way un stuck from the door at the bottom edge. Reseal with spray glue or similar
Water can track down the inside of the membranes and in to the floor pan

if you think it is in any way a leak, sit in the car while someone gives it a good going over with a pressure washer. You'll spot the water coming in much faster than it would just under gravity, and point you in the right direction
The passenger footwell on my 2001 TD4 was flooded ( probably from new ) as you can't see it because of the rubber backed carpet. I found it quite by accident one day, when I noticed a tiny drip at the door bottom front pillar, as I was sat waiting at lights. I lifted the carpet and it was sodden underneath. From new I had terrible condensation on the windscreen, most likely caused by all this water in the car. It was so bad I carried kitchen roll in the car to mop it up. Anyway on further investigation I found the leak. The water was coming in at the top of the windscreen, where the the roof rail indent, which was badly finished, meets the window seal, it was running down the inside of the window pillar, down the back of the trim at the door and under the carpet. I fixed it in two minutes after I eventually found it with some sealant. no more kitchen roll required. I couldn't believe that I had put up with all that F*****g condensation for three years, because of a stupid little thing like this. Rant Over. Give it a Try.
Did you seal it from outside or did you have to take the headliner out

One was blocked aircon drain but you say you haven't got this.
Another was a brand new defender TD5!!! They used a pressure washer to find and plug no less than 7 leaking seams. And a badly fitted door seal.
I mention this because the dealer reckoned a pressure washer with a guy inside looking was the fastest way to find a leak.
The last was simply a rusted through footwell Say no more nudge nudge...

Must have been frolicking with a local defender they are notorious for leaking. My last one nickname was mobile sieve. I would check where first. Try putting newspapers down then hose down from outside above. Then check. Also look underneath for rust at the footwell as a seam could have opened and while travelling in rain could seep in.
