Crankcase breather filter picture

Just thought i would share this picture of what happens if the crankcase breather filter is blocked and the dip stick is removed from the car, its amazing what pressure builds up and what the damage could be, no wonder its recommended to change regularly now.

Thank god for websites like this and the wonderfiul advice you all give or else I would say that there would be a lot more of that happening.

Once went to view one being sold by a trader from his home, he was telling me how well it had been looked after when I pulled the dipstick with the engine idling. It didn't make as much mess as that but It did leave him with a oily alternator and a nasty carbon black stain on his expensive block driveway!

Did you buy the BMW crankcase mod Billy?
I personally think that this should be a sticky also. it sounds to be a problem on Freelanders. i know that LR have advises it to be changed every 12K now but how many do it?

What I want to see is a picture of the guy who pulled the dipstick out in the first place. There is no sillouette in the oil on the floor... I'm thinking Mr Bean here.

Not done mine yet, waiting for next service. I think about the fact that is not mentioned in Haynes, the only way you would find out is here or through landy dealers. Also, what about all those MOT/service centres cracking them out for a ton? do you reckon they have done the full service spec, or have they dropped the oil and cheked the levels...

There will be enough hippos going the way of the scrappers before thier years, at least it means that you can get cheap spares on flea-bay!

It does not state in the manual and also noy in Hyanes too. My dealer also did not ask me to change until there is a leak at the turbo unit.

its a bmw part fitted to a E46 E90 E61 E61 & X3 diesel 00-05 models. Its a cyclonic breather so no filters as such, i've heard that the standard LR ones needed to be replaced every 12,000 miles! Mine had done 79,000 and no replacement :S

To replace take it you will need to remove the plastic cover, remove the injector wiring and you will see the breather at the rear of the block behind the injectors, there's 5 torx or allen bolts holding it in. IT can be a bit fiddly as the bolts are pretty inaccessible. Remember to replace the old gaskets with the new ones.

If your landy is a facelift model then you will need to cut a small alignment slot into the filter itself for it to fit.

Does take too long to do took me an hour.

On Fleebay these a good pic and info on this item No 200438014177,, but i would go for the part mentioned above

GOOD NEWS GUYS!! The part that I've been raving about that BMW supply to fit inside our existing Breather Housing.. Well I purchased the new (£20) BMW INTERNALS of the Oil seperator. and it fits without any mods. It took me about 1hour to fit. Guess what, the Freebee has been transformed!! No more misfires, pinking/diesel knock or black smoke.. and the best bit is no more yearly filter changes at £30 a go....

Its BMW part no 11 12 7 799 367 and retails at £18 +vat.

As I bought the new BMW kind crankcase breather filter last month, I changed it today, as the airfiltercover was off took also the opportunity to clean the MAF again (do it on a yearly basis after been advised to do so by the ruler of Zog). Re that filter, bought the entire piece, meaning the inside and the cover and I must say it went in without any problems. No need to cut whatever groove to fit etc. (mine is a MY01 Td4), just took out the old unit and replaced by the new one. It's only held by 4 Torx screws, not 5 as mentioned in an earlier post. Also when putting in the new gaskets make sure that the little "tabs" on the filters point towards the right hand side, for the left one there is a small groove to fit the tab towards the middle of the unit and for the right hand side gasket there is a small groove on the extreme right, check this position to avoid the tabs' fixation on the gasket keep out of the engine groove which makes the gaskets don't "fit" completely. Hard to explain, wished I had taken a picture. Anyway, also took all the contacts off from the injectors, the left hand top sensor (giving sometimes cold start problems) and the sensor of the fuel rail and sprayed a good contactcleaner in all these. After putting everything together again I started the car and it went on right away which makes me an happy man.

Is the same filter on freelander 2 ? Same symptoms at the mo but under the cover and air Hosea looked different from pictures? Any help appreciated Thanks

I doubt it as the engine in the 2.2 TD4/SD4 is not a BMW engine.
