just took the baby for a drive to get her off to sleep, couple of miles down the round the Freelander made a loud bang then clicking noise has continued to do this all the way home, drove 5mph wincing all the way, looked underneath as it sounded as if something had fell off, nothing, its just really juddery and making the loud click and banging noise when driving? Pleaseee someone tell me this isn't really terrible news

Recently posted about a vibrating noise when driving would that seem to fit? What would I be looking at to replace ird, all I need at the minute, got baby's birthday, Christmas, gutted.

and don't be driving it with the sproglet in there ...well not til it's fixed anyways

The ticking noise seems to come from the passenger front. What am I looking at price wise? Just looked on ebay Freelander ird box? If that's what I'm after I'm looking at 250 cheers for help lads

Jack up each corner and check each wheel, rock it top and bottom and from side to side ...

Also rotation, you may hear a rumbling or whatever ...

wheel bearings, warped brake discs (but you would feel this when braking as well), driveshafts CVs, and as has been said the rubber donut

If this is the ird what would be my cheapest option for the time being, or is there not one? :(

options: most £ to least £
Replace IRD, VCU [and VCU bearings]
Repair / replace IRD & keep 4WD ability - remove prop shaft and VCU - leave as FWD until £ are available - then refit new VCU...
Replace IRD with a FWD only one = no longer a 4WD.
Do nothing & walk
Sell it

the less kind would say something about petrol and matches but that has potential cost of prison time:(

Maybe now you'll take your props off!

If you do and the noise stops (or lessens dramatically) it will be your IRD or rear diff - unless your lucky and its a VCU support bearing or prop UJ that was causing the vibration and has finally given up in style.

Please, don't drive it again until the props are off, and don't put them back on until you've got 4 matching tyres.

Was taking em off this weekend aswell grumpy! Gutted just praying it not too bad.

Forgot to mention last night there was also a smell with whatever happened like gas? Does this help anymore with the diagnosis? Thanks for the help and advice so far everyone.

Sounds like the gear box spline to me. Jack the passenger front up an see if you can turn that wheel freely by itself. You may well also hear and feel the clicking. If it is the gearbox taking the prop off will leave you with no drive at all.

Mine had the prop off when I bought it and a couple of months later this happened to me. it was pushing all the power to the rear drive flange as the NSF drive shaft was effectively spinning without turning the wheel. With it being 2wd all that was happening was the drive flange out the back of the Ird was spinning uselessly!

There's still drive but its jerky and with the clicking and clunking, started it up this morning didn't move it, starts fine so all engine is good I assume? Getting it looked at tmorrlw, thanks for all the help everyone, think for time being I'm looking at taking props off till I've got more cash after crimbo, I'm assuming ill still need ird replaced though?

Have a look at the vcu, there is a steel band (weight) around the circumpherence of the unit. Mine came adrift last year - loud bang followed by clunking under the handbrake area. Can get a kit to repair on fleabay for about £80, but I went the full hog with a Bell engineering recon.
