Unable to get into any gear ?

Hi

I have a 200tdi Disco.

Yesterday I couldn't get from 1st to 2nd gear so stopped and found I couldn't get any gear. I had to stop the engine and restart and it was then fine.
This is the second time this has happened the last time was a couple of months ago.
I have had the Disco since last June and it has always been difficult to change from 3rd to 2nd.

Any ideas what this could be ?

may be that the slave cylinder is on the way out or worst case the clutch push rod may be breaking through the clutch fork . sorry

A new heavy duty land rover clutch was fitted beginning of last year so hope it's not the clutch then. What sort of job is the slave cylinder to do ?

Slave cylinder is easy enough. 2 bolts secure it to the bell housing and then there is the pipe from the damper to it that needs removing.

Careful when withdrawing the slave itself as you can pull out the pushrod from the fork inside the bellhousing - if this happens then you will have to drop the box out to refit.

I myself have an issue with the clutch - I can get all the gears easily but every now and then the clutch slips. I am changing the slave and then if all else fails I will do the clutch.

Have a wee look inyer master cylinder anaw to see what state the fluid is. It might even just be yer rubber hose to slave cylinder that's balloonin'

you may also find gearbox is worn out after all it could be 19 years old ,easy enough to rebuild

When the clutch was done did they change the clutch fork??

I know they "should" but did they?

I have no way of finding that out. Think I'll check the slave and master cylinders first. What sort of job is the clutch fork to do ?

Unfortunately it is quite involved as you ideally need to remove engine or box!

It is possible to do by splitting them and shifting the gearbox back a few inches but a fair bit of work regardless.

As you say, check the other bits 1st.
