TD5 Water drain on fuel filters are S**T!!!

Ok guys in know it is in a stupid place but this part is crap!

I have just had the second failure of the crap genuine landrover plastic cap on the bottom of the fuel filter. both have been hit by something and have sheared off. The filter was ok just the top of the cap missing,the thread still in side.
Thank F**k I had a spare filter and drain cap, Fu**ing soaked to this skin, and stinking of diesel, fuel ****ing all over the road I'm right hacked off

Bloody things must have cost over £50 in lost fuel by now

Does anyone know if I can get a better quality, idealy brass or metal water drain to fit, or do I just buy the water sensor type.

Watch you don't slip on my fuel on the A/M90 heading north

It doesn't matter if you have the water sensor or water drain. They both like to fail.

oh well just have to make a guard, some metal bashing if the rain and snow stay away.
Trip to stealer for more spare shi* caps I guess.

Just been working this out and recon I lost 50 ltrs at £1.34

Next question does this count as rust proofing the underside

The defender one can be made to fit on the Discovery with a little " modification "!.

I agree, that it is in a silly place, but I havnt smashed on off yet !

Hi Rob, there are two different options here:

1. The black plastic water sensor with wires connecting it to the car. Never had one break unless screwed in too hard;

2. The white plastic screw-in water tap that usually comes with a new fuel filter. Never had one break unless screwed in too hard.

Or there is the Victorian option as already mentioned - an appropriately sized bolt.


On the subject of lost fuel I lost nearly 3/4 of a tank of fuel in about 10 kms last year when I didn't notice that after taking out the old fuel filter I inadvertently left one of the rubber seals in place. Everything seemed normal until I glanced at the fuel gauge and that "That's not right??" Pulled over and saw a river of diesel behind me.

I was mad at myself for loosing maybe 70 euros worth of fuel plus - as a biker - leaving all this dangerous rubbish on the road. Needless to say I check and double check nowadays.

Being hamfisted with the cap was one of my thoughts but the last filter had been on the car for nearly 6000 miles with out a problem. then fuel pis*ing on the road out of the blue.
It is not even as if it was off road, the roads are bad but not that bad.

I have never bought a filter yet that came with the cap, paddocks, local motor factors. they all came with o-rings but no cap.

I am going to fold up a guard and fix it to the chasis with some rivnuts.

Just got to change the hieght sensors first as they are cracked at the fixing. I think when this is done I will look and see if it is possible to turn the two old sensors into one good spare.

By the way it is rare day up north the sun is out and it is warm

Perhaps I didn't explain myself clearly, when you buy the fuel filter, for instance from Paddocks, they come complete with a white plastic tap on the bottom. Now you can either take this off and install the black plastic fuel sedimenter or leave it as it is.

I know what you are talking about but I have never yet bought a fuel filter for my disco that has had the drain cap with it.
I have been buying the caps from landrover

Looks like I have been getting short changed

I will be asking when ordering the next time.
