Tailgate glass self destructed!

Hi all, Can't understand this one, but returned to my car at dinner time today to find that the rear tailgate glass had completely smashed. Not near the road, cctv showed no body went near it, but it was completely shattered.
Another trip down to the breakers this weekend and another £30 lighter.
I have heard of bonded screens shattering due to stress, but never a gasket one. No rot around the frame to damage the edge of the glass or anything.

Bewildered is an under statement!

Air rifle country?

Didn't find any pellet or anything else around the car or in it!
But will soon take mine in to work to retalliate if i did!

Oddly enough....

I was watching some discovery channel nonsense the other night...and they reckon 20 people a year in the USA are killed by ice falling from planes (not enough if you ask me)...so if you live on a flightpath....who knows??

My bet would be a pellet from an airgun.

If the gun was powerfull anywhere like around the legal limit, the pellet would disintergrate on impact with something solid like glass so you would only be looking for bits of a pellet.

I shoot a .177 at metal targets and the pellets disintergrate at 40yds

My did exactly the same last winter - cold morning bit of frost - turned on the heated rear screen and there wasa large crack and the screen shattered!! I had a look at the connections and the connection hadnt been very good and was arcing - therefore the high localised temperature of the spark caused the glass to crack. Check the connection on your new screen - switch it on and have a look - if its a dodgy connection you should see the sparks - mine cost a lot more than £30.

Picking it up tomorrow from breakers and its removed for me, so £30 can't complain, but would have preferred it not to have happened in the first place!
Wasn't in the car at the time and no frost and didn't have rear heated screen on in the morning, but will check to make sure connections are good.
Didn't see any meteorites in the local vacinity, or high flying planes! Did hear that superman could have done a low fly pass!
Maybe the air movement from his super sonic flight shattered it?
