Hi, I need help. I have a 200tdi manual disco, she has been fine for over 18 months and then on a down change the other day she got into second and thats it. cant get her out. its not the clutch because that relises fine. Anyone got any ideas?

If it was the clutch, it would be possible to get it out of 2nd by turning the engine off then using the gear lever. So it sounds internal to the gearbox, to me. Might just be a gear selector issue. Unsure how much you can do without removing/replacing the box, maybe worth an hour's worth of fiddling with the selector lever mechanism etc.

before you start panicing that its the gearbox check the selector. Remove the housing around the gearstick and handbrake. Remove the rubber thing which is riveted around the gear stick (drill out rivets) From memory I think theres another plate under that which you remove then theres a metal plate under that which I garuntee will be broken. Fingers crossed its got wedged in there hence the reason why your stuck in gear!!

you can have a look in the top ,plate mentioned is 3rd4th bias plate keeps springs balancing gear stick in line with 3rd 4th ,you can have a look under gear box top for broken interlock but more likely synchro spring jamming 1st 2nd synchro hub especially if lt77s (h suffix) as they have a compound baulk ring set up with two thruswashers that are prone to break, unless its something obvious with selector mechanism on g/box top theres not much can be done without stripping box

Had this with my 300. Would either not go into 1st, or would get stuck in 1st. Found out the problem, a 10p had got stuck in there:doh: .

90% chance this is the problem.

Hi, thanks for all the help people, I will have a good look at her today, if no luck she will go up for sale if anyone is interested.

Just finished striping her down and found the problem. The gear stick its self has broken were the tapered end goes through the ball joint. Does anyone know were I can get my hands on one?

i took mine out when i had my gearbox rebuilt cos it was worn down where the springs go, so i know exactly what you mean and where.

i spoke to ashcroft to see about getting a new one, they said its not a part they normally replace but they might have a few second hand lying about. i thought 'sod it' removed the stick, welded up where it was worn and reground it to shape.

as such, its probably easy for you to weld it also, but otherwise speak to ashcrofts and see if they have a spare main gearlever for an lt77 disco which they can sell you.

cheers
