Being out of work and stuff i decided today to have a gander at my sills as i already have the box section should they need repairing. Took off the trim and this is what greeted me.

Now the car has passed its MOT just 3 weeks or so ago. So how do these findings reflect on the pass? Would they fail the car on this?

Plucked up the balls to give the front section a valiant effort today. Although strictly speaking these were not in need of repair, i have alot of left over box section that i wanted to put to good use.

As the material here is good i decided to cut out alot less and give me some more material to work with while welding.

My welding is still shoddy, but improving all the time so im aware it looks like s**t.

Hope ya enjoy the pics :)

Welder supports gas and gasless welding, just havent got the equipment to support gas yet. The amount of welding i am doing lately i think it will be worth investing in a bottle, reg and the adapter. Getting out of hand :p

I would defiantly get the bits to use gas, I've got a gasless/gas one and the difference when using gas is amazing, a much nicer weld. You will never look back to using it without gas!

I shall being doing this soon to mine and replacing with strong box section, so shall be watching your progress :)

Make sure you get the right size box section. I got 2x3" with mine. So i have had to leave 25mm of material at the top of the sill so the bottom of the A and B posts line up. You need 3x4" 3.2mm should be fine for moderate rock slide usage. 5mm will be GREAT, but quite heavy and more expensive still

a lot of your metal is already oxercised (if thats a word) but not rotten bloody hard to do neat even with gas mig i think youve done alot better than i see from some garages

Cheers :D

Just Got a steal of a bargain. Will wait and see what condition theyre in before i get too excited. But a pair of rock sliders for £20 you can hardly go wrong :)

Sills that will outlast the car, and rock sliders. Hopefully they have tree bars on em too so the kids can get themselves in the car

Well i got 150A mig welder. Got bottle of argon and a reg. Just need the adapter to make the hose fit the welder then im good to buy standard wire.

Waiting for a message back off the guy. Theyre probably worth more than that in scrap metal. Struck gold

speaking to a guy at the garage that my mates disco was getting a MOT and he said the the sills and boot floor can be rivited in with no welding! surely that not right, and i hope it isnt because of all the painful hours of welding i have put in!

The boot floor can be riveted for sure. As it was only spot welded in before.

If you buy the complete replacement sill kit, that can be riveted in, but the way i am doing it, and the way you probably did. Welding is the only option

snap !!!ive just started the sills on me latest project disco the geezer sold it us cheap coz the garage quoted him £1350 just for the welding thing is im doing it all in sheets not box section and folding the sill and inner wheel arch panels myself done 1 arch and half a sill today bit of a ball ache folding me own pannels but fun aswell
