I sold my 2002 Disco ES TD5 some years ago and even though it seemed to have no end of niggling faults I have regretted it ever since. Had a Jag X-Type and Mazda RX8 since so slightly different driving experience.

Unfortunately my budget is now only around 5-6k, so whilst the last Disco I had was top spec with fairly low mileage I'm now probably looking at getting something from 90k mileage upwards I guess.

I know its a "how long is a piece of string" question, but typically what sort of mileage can it be expected to get too before serious maintenance costs get involved normally? Are the engines good for 150-160k mileage on average? Is a manual gearbox more reliable than an auto providing it hasnt spent a life time towing....

Cant remember whether the TD5 has a chain or belt?

Anyway enough ramblings and thanks for any advice.

It a chain...
Mines on 128k now & had it since 112k...maintenance wise in that time ive had
-inj loom
-engine loom
-2 air bags
-ace pipes
-pas pipes
-clutch & flywheel
-water pump
-head gasket
-oil pump bolt
-brakes
-usual servicing
-new BCU

So...yes 90k-120k seems like when things seem to wear out as I know a lot of folks who've changed similar on that mileage...but Id put good money on the fool who owned it previously not looking after it well enough TBH
That money will get you a nice unmolested one...
