Hi all, next job is looming i think (after i can be bothered to do the handbrake anyways :) )

How bad is a bad front hub oil seal? I am now getting about one drip of oil per day on the inside tyrewalls, after sitting for about 8 hours.

The swivels look fine so i guess the seals are just knackered.

Also, is it true you can snip the new seals at 12 o'clock and reassemble so you dont have to pull the hubs and balls off too??? I know they have a garter spring inside (which you obviously don't cut) but i'm sure i read that method somewhere sensible.

Dave

unbolt it and do it properly is it hub or swivel, swivel ,caliper off 2 x 13mm or 1/2 ,chrome ball 7x 14mm 9/16 bihex bolts silicone back up loctite on bolts,1-2 hrs, jack that side hih so dont loose axle oil

To translate, with punctuation and more words...

Unbolt it and do it properly. Is it the hub or the swivel [that you are asking about]? [If it is the ] swivel ,[then take the ]caliper off (2 x 13mm or 1/2 [bolts to undo]). [To remove the ]chrome ball [undo ]7x 14mm 9/16 bihex bolts. Silicone [When doing them] back up [use ]loctite on [the ]bolts. [The job should take you about ]1-2 hrs. [Make sure you] jack that side hi[g]h so [that you ]dont loose axle oil.

I don't know what the silicone is for though, could be silcone grease to smear on the new seals before you fit them.

Hope that helps:)

instead of easier when refitting hub assemlbly back on axle while lining up half shaft in diff
Yes, I guess I would have used blue hylomar or what ever it's called to stick the paper gasket in place, but doing away with it altogether sounds like a better option...btw, does any one know what the "RTV" stands for in RTV Sealant and what is the difference between RTV sealant from motor factors and silcone sealant from B&Q (besides RTV being black and silcone sealant from B&Q being white or clear)?

RTV stands for :Room temperature vulcanising

Ok, so it's ball off of axle, I take it that will bring the half shaft with it?
Caliper off.
Track rod joints off.
Replace seal and refit?

I have found seal FTC3401G and gasket FTC3646, is that about it?

Jack up to stop oil loss, will anything drain from hub, I think the shaft has an oil seal doesn't it?

Dave

yes ,ftc3646 was what i replace with silicone as lr did after 93/4 but gasket good just watch it when locating half shaft in diff splines,i would like to see somone torque those bolts up with std torque wrench how would they get job finished

Ok, im going in this weekend.

Should the seal lip with the garter spring be facing into the hub or out of the hub?
Its a double-lip seal but only one has a spring.

Hopefully that will be the only stumbling block.

Yeah i put one shot in, it lasted about 6 months but now its dripping out which will leave no lube in the swivel. Its dripping on the tyrewalls so its not good.

They're coming off this weekend, dont sound too bad a job if the ball/swivel/hub/shaft comes off as one lump.

Need to check the brakes and bearing play anyway.
